to me a pure boxer is one who doesn't over extend himself (like a lot of punchers end up doing). but keeps his balance well centered at all times. also they throw all the text book punches. keep their chin tucked in, hands up at all times etc etc. they don't go charging in the for the kill when an opponent is hurt but rather usually carefully continue to break their foe down until a perfect opportunity arises. basically they aren't awkward or big risk takers by nature. i could be talking outta my ass but that's how i see them
would anyone say hopkins because he uses technical ability to get the job done even if its boring, (nevermind someones already said it ha) i think willie pep more so than anyone.:good
You are very wrong. Calzaghe does not fit the description of a pure boxer in any way, and that's nothing to do with my opinion of him. He relies very heavily on physical attributes like handspeed and stamina. His defence is very sloppy, and defence is a crucial element of boxing skills. He relies more on physical tools than on technical boxing skill.
Mike Tyson. A combination of hurting power & elite defense but the priority is to hurt, thats always been what boxing has been about, the priority is to hurt. I dont know where people get the idea from that boxing is about "not getting hurt". People created the sport for entertainment.
I think a lot of people are confusing pure boxing with just having a low KO rate, which isn't necessarily so. Toney should be getting more love here: ATG defense, effective sneaky offense, works very well with counters and efficient footwork.
