I want an unbiased, knowledgeable boxing fan to help me understand Calzaghe. He seems to be a polarizing figure around here, but I want an honest analysis of how boxing history should classify Calzaghe.

    Thanks, a curious American.

Edit your title, and type Calzaghe instead of Joe.

Then there'll be pages of answers.

He was very good and would prob have beat 99% of all SMW in his era but legacy is tarnished by lack of defining fights and unwillingness to travel. His punch output and boxing brain was world class though and had a great chin.

Put the 168lb division on the map? Your just making **** up now. It had no relevance during Calzaghes reign because nobody was fighting in that division. Please state facts, don't make up **** just because you love the man.

Chad Dawson would go through his entire resume without a single defeat.

    Nuff said.

He was good but his record was more padded than a paddling pool. The only fighters he fought worth a mention realistically were Hopkins who obviously he beat by split decision but was very close and he was so confused and struggled in that fight. Going on that fight its fair to say a prime Hopkins would have taken him to school. Also he beat Kessler and he didnt beat him easily as someone previously suggested he won by a few rounds not nearly as easily as Ward dominated Kessler. Other fighters who Calzaghe defeated worth a mention are obviously Chris Eubank but I dont class him as elite yet was very good, Jeff Lacy was most likely a hype job and would have been exposed later had not calzaghe exposed him and roy jones you cant really say he beat roy jones because the person he beat was not even a shell of the real roy jones. So all in all was good but safe to say prime roy jones, hopkins and ward would have easy nights work against him. He would beat most of the others and would probably even push James Toney very close.

    The greatest of his era.

A green Calzaghe defeated and put down iron chinned Chris Eubank. Injury setbacks which usually finish fighters only showed Joe's versatility, though he was at a loss in finding opponents due to the stay at home nature of people like Jones,Hopkins etc who wanted nothing to do with him, especially Hopkins who doubled his demands he came to true recognition with the most beautiful display of boxing when he creamed Lacy forever ruining him.
He went on a rampage gobbling up champions and fighters, made light work of the prime Bika when the shot one went life and death with prime Ward, he dismantled Kessler, bloated himself semi retired and with his brittle hands on foreign soil humiliated a prime Hopkins and near prime Jones until retiring with a perfect record.

A long list of world champions on his resume, would have been far more had he not been avoided, but simply he may have been unbeatable. He adapted like water, his speed was like a 168lb Pacquaio, his output was relentless, iron chinned, stamina inhuman and skills which often bamboozled opponents. An ATG who had he been American and black would undoubtedly be accredited as one of the greatest. You only have to look at a guy who lost to a shoe salesman and went life and death with Bika to see how much more hype and respect being a black American fighter gets you.

A fighter who openly said he didn't want tough fights, enough said really.
