Somebody honest and knowledgeable help me understand Calzaghe

What is prime Jones? the PED popping sanitation workforce annihilator? Or the post PED popper who was being sparked out by journeymen and gatekeepers?

That night he was somewhere inbetween, certainly showed his old pace which Calzaghe danced around with ease, the heavy footed bloated Calzaghe wrecked by brittle hands I might add.

 

Calzaghe fans always resort to denigrating other fighters in order to big up their man because they know that if the focus solely on his career it simply doesn't stand up in all that well.

I mean, do you need to run down others to prove someone like Duran's greatness? -no.

 

Ignore what people on here tell you, the majority are the patriotic USA kids who stick by their fighters like Jones and Hopkins. The truth is, Calzaghe destroyed those that went infront of him, what more can a man do? He was a fighter who schooled Jones, made Hopkins looks useless, destroyed Kessler. His record was great, he had the belts, he had the glory, more importantly he retired undefeated! These yanks are jealous none of their fighters came close to this apart from Marciano, who was really Italian!! :hey

 

Given Joe's weak resume...what do you expect from a desperate group of fans?:-(

In hind sight, with them downplaying others, its only making Joe's resume look that much weaker.

 

LMAO. If Jone's is apparently a steroid cheat and never beat anyone but sanitation workers then why do you always bring up the fact that Joe Cal beat a "near prime" Roy Jones. I do believe race and nationality helps in boxing, the majority of boxing fans in the west are coagulated in the USA, seeing a black fighter come from the streets turn his life around and represent their country is a marketing dream in boxing. Hattons appeal was because he was working class, not especially talented but fought with heart, his support was with the working class of Britain because they related to him, he was never of a high level though.

 

Duran actually took challenges and wasn't on PED's.

Roy Jones is a big name on Joe's resume but not even close to the best name on it. In boxing fans eyes he is because he was so well marketed and malleable minded fans were sedated into believing this synthetic product was the greatest thing ever, the myth was soon dispelled when they tried to step up his competition from Sanitation workers and corpses of big names to C level gatekeepers who sparked him out for beyond 10mins on occasion!

 

Big wins and ambition. Hatton and Lewis both get a ton of respect from even keeled American posters, but they had the drive to take on the best available; even if they each lost a couple.

Had Hatton replied to a question about Mayweather with "I'm not looking for tough fights" I'd have a different opinion of him. But, Hatton stepped up to the plate and earned a ton of respect.

I actually think Calzaghe would have done great with American fans had he come over earlier and got more known. He is a classy likeable guy, and there are plenty of Americans that do like white boxers.

 

I'm not saying white fighters aren't liked, but that you are at a disadvantage if you are white, promoting and publicity wise for the reasons stated, black fighters are more endearing to the American public.

Joe did always say he was desperate for unification fights, and how before Lacy he was frustrated as boxing politics and managers kept him from the big fights, I think we saw this with Hopkins most evidently, but it explains why so many fights he chased and names mentioned never materialised. I don't think someone who was effectively green when beating a HOF granite chinned power punching savvy tactician Eubank can be called protected.

 

A great fighter who gets unnecessary hate due to the fact that he was not american.

this is the odd attitude Americans have to Joe. Kessler & Lacy were the best SMWs at the time and Joe took their 0's. Joe did not really duck anyone but he did waste a huge part of his career with ****** fighting low level challengers (exactly like Hatton)
