Amir Khan is the WBA Light Welterweight champion, and last night in Argentina Maidana won the WBA World Interim Championship. Why does the WBA need an Interim champion?
To ask the question is to give the answer. They don't. They want an interim champion because of the extra sanctioning fees.
The question should be about when they are going to order a bout between Khan and Maidana. And if they ever do, the next question that should be asked is how long it will take Khan to vacate the belt rather than fight Maidana.
