People are claiming he was some sort of beast at LMW despite his record there being mediocre at best. Let's have a look: First up was Yuri Foreman, an undefeated champion, but an undefeated champion who has never fought an A level fighter and was considered as one of if not the weakest ABC champion throughout the divisions at the time. Foreman was actually giving Cotto a tough fight up until he injured his leg although I suspect most would have expected Cotto to win the fight if the injury had not occurred. Next up was crude Slugger Ricardo Mayorga. The 39 year old had only fought once, against a nobody who had only won one of his last seven. before that Mayorga had been sporadic losing 4 of 7 bouts over a five year period. he was well and truly past his prime when Cotto fought him. Lastly was a grudge match against former victor Antonio Margarito. Margarito's form suggested he was well past his prime as well as he was handed one sided beat downs by Mosley and Pacquaio with his only victory since their first encounter coming against a lesser level fighter in Roberto Garcia. Margarito's eye was also destroyed by Pacuiao which nearly led to the fight being cancelled. This was evident by the swelling that flared up immediately in the fight with Cotto. Margs record at the LMW limit is less than spectacular with losses to Rodney Jones and Daniel Santos at the weight with a few wins over less than stella competition. So, i can accept that Cotto was considered no1 in the division due to the fact that none of the top contenders have fought each other their but lets not pretend that he was on some epic run of destruction. The other thing I kept hearing was that Cotto was the bigger guy, now that's not necessarily true either. Mayweather is an inch taller than Cotto and has a 5" reach advantage, true Cotto was several pounds heavier but looking at them they are pretty much the same size. If anything, I would concede that Cotto is more acclimatised to the weight than Mayweather was but his is not a bigger guy. Now before I get a load of guys coming on and shouting their mouths of this isn't taking a shot at either Floyd or Miguels achievements. I like Cotto and I think he is a very good world level boxer who is on the decline but still good enough to give anyone in and around his division a good fight. I also admit that this was a solid win for Floyd last night if not a career defining fight for him. I'm just sick to death of people overhyping boxers achievements to fit their own agenda.
Cotto was an elite fighter Ortiz was a young hungry lion They are currently trying to think up of a catch-phrase for the next pushover. Maybe Margarito - never say never or something.
Cant give cotto credit so you discredit him Cotto fought well and showed he has loads left in the tank when hes not getting cheated
Not discrediting either boxer, I rate mayweather as the best current boxer P4P and I have Cotto as a near top ten guy. Both are very good and have proved this over their many years in boxing. I'm just saying that he was getting way overhyped for this fight as a 154 lb boxer and as a comparison as a much bigger guy than Mayweather. If you disagree, fine, i will listen to your reasoning but none of you has even tried to offer any evidence against what I said in the Op.
Spot On :deal Cotto showed his class last night and has beaten some good names in their prime. Not only a class fighter a class man.
