Someone explain why Ray Leonard is ranked so highly?

big deal. he still lost and not by a little, but by a lot

I gave Wilfred 1 round against Leonard

2 rounds against Hearns

and NONE for the Hamsho fight

the Moore fight? well, that didnt last long enough to count more than one round

what a pathetic fighter. he's overrated

 

see, what u want to have is a fighter that can not only make u miss but WIN

a fighter like Terry Norris who not only could make Ray miss by miles but make him pay for the miss

Terry was so much better than Ray on so many levels, quicker on the trigger, better defense, smarter, and 100% more professional

everything Ray came up with, Terry had the answers for until Ray became so discouraged he finally gave up trying to win and just accepted defeat

Wilfred didnt have any speed so of course he couldnt win or even clone close. Ray leonard has nothing to fear from guys like WIlfred who are slow with their fists and canthit worth a damn

he IS fearful of fighters like Terry who not only are fast but hit hard. Terry already had Ray intimidated by the third as his guts turned to jelly after getting slapped down

Could Benitez do THAT?

no, Benitez was a very limited fighter with not much fight in him

I guess the only way to really know is if they fought the same level of competition. Some guys look great until they step up. Leonard has the better competition and the better wins so until Floyd has that Leonard is the better fighter. It's like comparing Teofilo Stevenson to Muhammad Ali. Stevenson looks great, he has all those victories in the amateurs, but Ali fought pros.

 

BTW, Hearns wasn't that far ahead. After 13, he was leading by 2, 3, and 4 points; had he survived the 14th, he would have lost at least a 2-point round, giving him, effectively, a 1-point lead entering the final round (and making it a draw going into the final round had Leonard won the 14th by a 10-7 margin). Based on Leomard's success in the 13th and 14th, while Hearns might have won a hypothetical 15th round, it seems more likely that Leonard would have won it, ensuring at least a draw for Leonard, and a win if either the 14 was a 10-7 round or the 15th was another 10-8 round.

On a side note, it's rather shameful the way you denigrate Benitez in your singleminded effort to minimize every Leonard accomplishment. Benitez was one of the best fighters in the world at one time (the best, at one time, per Teddy atlas), and one of the ten best defensive fighters of all time, per Bert Sugar. He was also only the 7th fighter in boxing history to win world titles in three weight classes at the time of his doing so. He's a deserving Hall of Famer whose major crime was being right in the middle of a star-studded logjam of talent around the same weight classes. Two of his losses (and three of his wins) were to fellow Hall of Famers, and two others were meaningless parts of an ill-advised comeback four years after his already past-prime retirement. He certainly deserves more than to be a punchline in your one-trick-pony show of insulting Leonard.

 

You make some good points,but... There are two people on here that simply put, are not mentally stable... It comes out with their language and unintelligent rants bordering on dysfunctional. I ( and most on here don`t enable them) The one you are debating right now is the lead one... A discussion/debate needs two rational people. You are alone on this one...

 

This thread does. You've been directly challenged on a number of quotes and claims, had them contradicted by actual sources and done nothing but blather on since. This thread is nothing more than a source of amusement at this point. remember, Ray had lost the first five and only won the 6,7 13th with the 8th being even. people dont remember how poorly Sugar performed, and it was at this point I saw that Ray had real problems coping with speed & mobility and was reduced from sweet to sugarless.

all he did was really just throw haymakes trying to get lucky.no skill involved with that. so his performance was nothing special. i expected Ray to beat the hitman given Tommy's level of experience but was left with a sour taste becuz of his performance

it was then that I abandoned the Sugar Ray express and jumped on the Marvin Hagler express

Benitez, so he had a few trick moves. but could he win fights with it? Benitez can be compared with a football team who is great on defense but cant put up any points. what happens, they eventually get outscored. that's what happened in the Sugar Ray fight

Had he been the complete package like Norris, combining both defense with blinding speed N power, Wilfred would be left untouched AND left the fight a winner
