Ive seen alot of scattered stuff on the boards but i can get a clear idea of whats going on. We have Setanta over here also which i watch every time there is a fight. Is the whole thing going bust? How did this come about? How long has it been going on for? I thought it was a pretty successful channel? Thanks for any help
If Setanta dont stump up three million quid they owe to scottish football by today, theres talk of the SPL sueing them, & I would say its ta ta to Setanta. Which will sadden me. After ITV digital got pumped by SKY al those years ago, I cant say Im surprised that Setanta couldnt compete with them either...
What Dunky said, im from Scotland myself and there is talk of 3 top SPL clubs going to the wall along with setanta if they fail to stump up the 3 million.
Here is a link. It's saying the David Haye pullout is connected! http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/article-1190673/Final-whistle-set-blow-Setanta.html
That bit can be read two ways... The Haye fight is off because of Setanta's troubles or, The Haye fight being off means they are more likely to go bust. Its hard to word it, and most people presume it means the first option, but its just an alternative reading
Just curious,is Setanta a pay per view channel or just a premium channel like HBO over here where you have to pay an amount of monthly payments to watch 24 hour sports commercial free?
haye fight is just another nail in the ever closing coffing. most channels flow with putting loans on what they are going to do so by the time they have sold it they hope they will get a return. sadly setanta has over done it's budget and is either 3 million short or has 3 million in bonds it doesnt want to move. i worked for Musflash and they had to put alot of loans on the studio the corperation fees and having to pay sky for the pleasure. problem was that the money didnt turn up in the end so they had to invest more hoping for a bigger return which of course leads down a slippery slope. they kinda got bought over by revelation which is a christian channel i believe (i had left before this). which is the same road setanta will go over i.e. a bigger company will bolster them. espn has showed willing. but sky clearly dont want a major brand on uk subscription...from what i logically think sky might bolster them, and be put slightly in there pocket. it would be worse business sense to have a brother channel than a rival.
Maybe that is where their business model went wrong. If the channel was free there would be more viewers and hence more advertising revenue, and PPV could have been used to pay for the big contracts e.g. SPL games would be shown for free, except those involving Celtic and Rangers which would be on PPV, and Old firm derbies would always be a PPV event. They could then cover all big fights and show them to a wider audence who would not mind paying for special events, if the rest of the channel was free
I think Setanta's problem wasn't the subscription fees as such, but the fact they bought such a wide range of sports, instead of just focusing on a core few sports like football, boxing and basketball for example. I don't think they had a good understanding of what their audience wanted to see.
