Something Manny Steward said pre Hatton-Mayweather

I think Stewart can sometimes be a bumbling moron as much as he can be a tactical genius, but he did say something right before Hatton and Floyd fought which is quite curious if you watch the fight.

I think he said "Hatton knows how to do things to neutralize the shoulder roll, he uses his feet, and uses angles, I think his footspeed may cause Mayweather some problems"

If you watch the fight, I can't really see many times where Mayweather used the shoulder roll to effect, and he was troubled by Hattons footspeed early on. In the fight, he relied mostly on forearms, clinches(****ing cortez), and eventually pure boxing skills to beat Hatton.

Just an observation, but Hatton forced Mayweather to fight a much different fight than he usually did around then.

I actually think you're right and that was a top notch performance by Hatton despite the comedy KO, and he'll always be remembered for that fight in this country and how he left it all on the line.

Ricky Hatton could move forwards faster that Mayweather could move backwards or side ways, this was why he was pressured in every single round. And he was pushed in this fight, there was 1-2 rounds in it come the stoppage.

    Hatton's handspeed was underrated aswell!

Mayweather was forced to fight inside the pocket, which he is very very good at. But also Hatton is also a master inside the pocket! Before this fight, everybody seemed to think Mayweather could not fight inside the pocket! Which is one of his biggest strengths.

It was by no means, a one side fight for Floyd Mayweather! That is a complete and utter myth! anybody who says that, does not know boxing, did not watch the fight, or is just in general a complete ******.

Throughout the fight, Manny Stewart kept saying that Mayweather was uncomfortable! Hatton was one of the few fighters from the past few years to force Mayweather to actually fight! Because Hatton's strengths disabled Mayweather's tendency to just use his mobility and speed to just out box him.

Hatton unsettled him for sure, Hatton was light on his feet and he was willing to attack Mayweather which others wouldn't do.

Many pressure fighters coming forward in straight lines and plod way in, Hatton did become a straight line fighter by that time and was relying heavily on strength but his footwork moving in and out was still good enough to cause Mayweather some issues.

Many banked on Hatton getting inside and ripping Floyd to bits to the body and just mauling him. Floyd though used his forearms to blind Hatton and took him apart with heavy single shots on inside and slowly broke Hatton down. People i think especially casuals believed Mayweather was a fancy dan who couldn't take the rough stuff..

Floyd was setting traps throughout the fight, Hatton didn't really have a plan B and once the deduction happened it sped up the process and he got taken out due to over committing.

I felt the fight was competitive without being close, Floyd just had other gears that Hatton couldn't go to. Ricky's footwork was better in his early days and i think by the time he fought Floyd he lost the key to perfect pressure fighting.

Every fight became like a body building build up, Kerry Kayes become as important as Graham.

Yeah you can't take away Mayweather pot shot/clinch approach at face value regardless of cortez, and he exploited Rickys style too, that deserves credit in and of itself.

But only on hindsight watching Floyd/Marquez and Floyd/Cotto, two more fights where he uses slight shoulder rolls to counter the straight rights, and comparing it to the Hatton fight, there is quite a difference in the approach that I've re-recognised.

Floyd switched it up when he had anyway

Mayweather 'schooling' Hatton is a myth I wish people would lay to bed.

For the first six rounds he caused Floyd loads of trouble.

hatton was on fire from the get go..mayweather was pushed back and under pressured for sure! Imagine if it was in the UK? Floyd just used certain advantages and picked hatton in parts from rounds 3/4 onwards.
The fight from the build up to the ring walks and the first bell was something else!!!

    Yes! It's a complete myth....

Hatton & Mayweather have been Mayweather's hardest fights across 140/147/154....

The fact of the matter is, even up until the stoppage Hatton was right in the fight even with a point deduction. In the first half of the fight, Mayweather was uncomfortable, which Manny Stewart kept on stating.

It was a tough fight for Mayweather and a good win! and his best win in my opinion! Hatton was at his absolute peak.

Plus Mayweather didn't need steroids to beat him.

Always liked Hatton's footwork don't see many fighters at the top level with that bounce thing he does but it closes the gap well. Not seen the fight in a long while but remember it pretty much like skills said. You just felt Floyd was going to adapt or see it out. Props to Hatton though I didn't see him giving floyd half the trouble he gave him even if he wasn't winning the rounds. It's a shame as someone said his effort will only be remembered for the KO and the casual fan expecting a bit more.

Hatton was very good and gave pbf a good fight.

  11. It's a shame because he will always be remembered for being sparked out on the rockstar logo.

He did well in the fight, I mean he never ever could have won it, but with fair officiating it would have been a little closer.

And if Hatton hadn't kamikazed at the end it could have been a decision for mayweather but gone down as a tough fight.

As I say though due to the way things did go, the myth is that Hatton was given a lesson and brutally ko'd late.

It's sad because Hatton had a lot of facets to his game that have been forgotten, people now see him as a skill-less plodder with a fanbase.

His main problem was that never take a backwards step attitude. It's funny because I've seen a guy like Miguel cotto literally running away from manny to avoid getting knocked out. And he's respected as a warrior, yet Hatton who would hold his ground against anyone is called a glass jawed bum. I'm sure Hatton could have survived in the mayweather fight by running and lasted a lot longer against pack, but it just wasn't his way.

The disrespect he gets is disgusting really

Thats a good post and i agree with most, except that he never ever could have won, i'm a believer in it only takes that one punch. After watching the Mayorga and Mosely fight i think it was i realise anything can happen in this sport due to the nature in what the guys are doing.

Good thread. I watched the fight the other day for I don't know what time, but it really is a shame Hatton gets laughed at for that fight and remembered for being flattened. Ricky made Floyd **** his drawers in the first round when he knocked him off balance.

Only one person got schooled in that fight and it was Hatton who PBF severely outclassed.
