Not surprised as Gould's overall knowledge of the game is lightyears ahead of Gallops. Shame I missed it. You can bet The Daily Telegraph will neglect to mention it unless they can put a different spin on it. Simple fact is that the game would be much better off if someone with the game's best interest at heart ran it. Good example is bringing grand finals back to 3.00pm but Gallop caves into external pressures and leaves it as an evening game, even though the majority of fans want it brought back to 3.00pm AS DO THE PLAYERS. BTW, the majority of the Bulldogs players were told by Sonny that he was leaving which is why none of them have come forward to bag him, except Andrew Ryan who as club captain had an obligation to tow the club line. If you listened to him you would have noticed how passive his disappointment really was.
Gould delved into every aspect he could possibly fit into a 5 minute ramble. His passion was intense but well directed for the good of the game. Let it be noted he didnt like the way Sonny Bill did what he did but understood his frustrations. I hope something good comes of this with respect to strengthening NRL as a code cause Rugby and it's unlimited funds will start eating away at it.
There's so many issues that need to be addressed it aint funny. The problems started when the privately owned Brisbane Broncos entered the competition....which I'm not going into at 2.00am, but basically it signalled the end of the leagues clubs running the show in co-ordination with the NSWRL and then the ARL. To run any successful business you need smart, strong willed people who will make the tough decisions in the best interest of the business. Australian rugby league hasn't had that for some time. Instead we get people that choose to wheel and deal in an attempt to keep the money men happy. Put a line through every decision made since Newtown were ommitted from the competition and start again. :deal
I can tell you now what will happen... Sonny Bill will get an attack of Homesickness..... He won't cope too well with the arrogant French.... What will make it worse ....is that he will soon enough realise that while he is contracted to the Froggies.... he has yours and buckley's of playing for the allblacks.... The Froggies will get the shits when they realise how injury prone he is and he will come under all sorts of pressure to play while injured.... And he will know that he has cut his bridges with Rugby League and there is no going back.... The stupid **** has broken a contract and most likely ****ed up his life....I won't be crying any tears... I loathe Canterbury....but they paid a lot of money for a guy who hardly ever managed 2 consecutive games... I hope the Dumb**** gets exactly the **** he deserves...
Homesickness can be cured by those big flying objects up in the sky called planes. As for his ability to play union, I think he'll make a great No.8 and will enjoy being out of the spotlight and having to deal with lounge chair experts and drunken fans like yourself. :yep The extra cash will do nicely too. Good luck to the kid. He has been presented with an opportunity that many of us can only dream of...which I guess plays a part in all the vindictiveness.
Bitter Bitter man :yep I can tell you one thing that has gone right for him at the moment, he has left the Bulldogs lol:
Is it really a surprise that under educated sportspeople follow the money? Rugby League is a regional sport in every country its played in, and as such in the days of Pro Rugby and Northern Hemisphere dominance how is the finacially weak NRL and its 12,000 crowds ( on a good day) going to compete with the glamour of European union? RL is dying in Australia. It lacks support and backing, can not get outside its traditional niches and has some of the worst behaved figureheads of all major aussie sports. It suffers from a macho, bull**** mentality and as such atracts the same sort of coverage. Union has far more to offer a rugby player and fan, and unless Australia can compete with the larger, more powerful nations it will most likely see its major players jump ship. And who can blame them?
Can someone explain to me how rugby league in england has more money than rugby league in australia? I have never lived in england but understand it to be no where near as popular as it is here.
Better currency over there, they probably get more through leagues clubs, ect too. Their crowds arent better than the NRL's though.
It's through a better television deal with Sky sports too I think. I doubt Rugby League is dying in Australia. If the Super League war of the 90s didn't kill it, not much will. When you're talking about Origin being sold out in 45 mins like it ALWAYS is in Qld, there's obviously still a solid support.
Apparently SBW seeked legal advice before he left Australia regarding the salary cap being used as a restraint of trade. If it goes to court, he'll use this as his defence. The NRL have a bad record when it comes to court cases, and if SBW is successful, it could very well open up a can of worms for other clubs, players ect.
Hope the NRL gives him a life suspension. If you sign on for 5 years and **** off after 1 or 2, with little to no warning, you have no honour. I'm the first to admit I'm no NRL expert. But strikes me this bloke is the most selfish player in the comp since a bloke called Mundine!
