Liston KO's Gerry in 6 or 7 rounds. Cooney might rock Sonny in the early going, but Sonny was a better boxer and breaks him down via the jab and solid bodywork. Two or three knockdowns finish it for the night.

Liston's aura would shake Cooney's confidence well before the 1st punch is thrown.
Though Cooney fought a brave fight against Holmes, his behavior after the fight
showed quite a bit about his character. He proved to be mentally weak.
This Liston would pick up on immediately. Holmes maybe a greater fighter
than Liston was , but he was no way near as threatening.

Liston would make Cooney fight a overly cautious fight. It would lead to Liston
catching Cooney early stopping him in 7rds or less.

Was Sonny "mentally weak" against Ali in 1964 & 1965? He crapped the bed in the 2 biggest fights of his career!!!

Liston got right back on the horse or in the ring after his losses to Ali, though he was well past his prime.
Cooney needed to have his arm twisted just to train again, lived in a alcohol bottle, hid from the public. Its not that one suffers defeat, its how one deals with it. Liston though past prime handled his losses in a better fashion than Cooney.

Patterson-era Liston busts Cooney's mouth and eye open with the jab and knocks him down at least twice with left-rights. Cooney is stopped in the corner, looking for a place to fall. It might go two rounds.

Sorry for the late response. Excellent post! I wouldn't include Foreman in there. Liston hit just as hard, had better endurance, was a superior boxer, had a better iq, jab, and was more well rounded and overall skilled. I'd just about favor Louis though I'd give Liston an excellent chance. I wouldn't favor any of the swarmers but I'd give Frazier, Tyson, and Dempsey fair chances. Absolutely none to Marciano as he didn't even have a speed advantage like the others but he's also the smallest, despite being the slowest and worst boxer out of the 4. Holmes has a good chance but I think he's to brawl-happy, and if Shavers caught him, you can bet your ass that Liston will as well and when he does, he will finish the job.

Yes good post. I forgot about Dempsey but yes, Dempsey would be an underdog with a punchers chance due to his speed and power.

Liston-Holmes is interesting. Holmes may not be as willing to trade with him as he was with Shavers because he knows that Liston is so much more dangerous.

Mostly agree with the rest of your post.

Liston gets shaken up by Cooney s initial attack, the crashing left hooks have him looking unsteady. But that's just the story for the first two rounds. By the third, Liston s Jab is banging in to Gerry s face and causing his eye to shut.
But Cooney for his faults bravely hangs on in. It's soon plain to see that it's only a matter of time before liston overpower s his man.

I'd favor Tyson, Holmes, Moorer and Lewis. Maybe Anthony Joshua.
