Sonny Liston of 1959 vs Jimmy Ellis of 1967. Sonny Liston in peak form faces Jimmy Ellis of the 1967 bout against Oscar Bonavena. Who wins and why?

I honestly can't say. Ellis was certainly at his peak and Liston may have been as well. I give Liston a slight edge though. However, because of styles, Ellis would be a favorite here. I still favor Liston a little, and I would pick him by a knockout in say, 10. This would be a dandy, as both were very sharp on those nights and took an excellent battering.

In 1959, Sonny fought with a broken nose against Cleveland Big Cat Williams to kayo the Big Cat.

I am aware of that. Jimmy fought Patterson with a broken nose for 15.

Truthfully, who hit harder, Patterson or Big Cat Williams? And Liston kayoed his opponent.

I do think Liston was much more impressive in his peak than Ellis, who was not always accurate, and who tired quickly imo, but I have always maintained that any good boxer with good stamina could outbox Liston with relative ease. Since Ellis wasn't a plain-and-simple outfighter in the vein of Ali, different allowances would; have to be made which would make Ellis more vulnerable to a loss, but I still think Ellis has a reasonable chance for victory here.

No trying to put Liston down, but fighting with a broken nose, for any amount of time, is impressive against anyone. But Liston only did it for a few rounds. Ellis showed a lot of mettle lasting 15 with one, although he only had one good moment in the entire fight.

I also saw that fight live on ABC's Wide World Of Sports, many thought that Floyd Patterson had regained the title.

I do as well. Patterson looked awesome. Ellis was disappointing, although understandably. This defined robbery. I know it has received criticism, some saying that Cosell's pro-Floyd commentary is what caused people to think that Patterson was robbed. I didn't need any commentary to see Floyd was robbed. Ellis got beat up.

I remember what Howard was saying, but I scored it for Floyd, I think then that I figured if Joe beat Oscar Bonavena, which he did easily on Dec 10 1968, that Joe could beat Jimmy.

Howard did not say that but I myself figured that about a fight between Joe and Jimmy, because he struggled against Patterson.
