    Agreed, Lyle had NOTHING in the Cooney fight. Went to the ropes with no legs, and got KO`d.

    I think intimidation would play a factor here. Cooney, could get tweaked and if he found himself caught in the stare of Liston... Liston had a great jab, booming right and two fisted KO power. Cooney had one punch and I feel that Liston had superior ring savvy as well. Liston backs him up with that amazing 84 inch reach and stops him early. Clay (Ali) had his number but you weren`t going to outpunch Liston, ask `Big Cat` Williams...

    Exactly why, at the time, my late friend and I bet $500 bucks apiece on Larry. By the end of the 3rd, we were annoying everyone in the room with our "what an easy way to make a buck!" rants...:smoke

    Excellent and cogent point. Of course Gerry didn't play the psych game, and his eyes would have been fixed on the floor while Sonny's were burning laser holes through the top of his head. This isn't a good situation for Cooney to be in. Foreman was no longer playing the intimidator when he wiped Gerry out, Michael Spinks never had that kind of persona, and Holmes didn't apply it during Mills Lane's instructions, simply muttering to Cooney to make it a good fight. In contrast, Liston would be laying it on thick.

    Sonny showed with DeJohn, Big Cat, Clark, Zech, McMurray and Wepner that greater height was no kind of issue for him to deal with effectively. Being a hooking specialist, Gerry further concedes the optimal use of height and reach to Liston. This is a circumstance where Sonny may well have the speed advantage.
