Sonny Liston and heroin

There was rumors that Sonny Liston was heroin user and Ron Lipton said that was true and that Liston and Joe Louis were great friends and were taking heroin for years.If that was true I am impresses how Liston was unique physical specimen because he was still strong as hell in his last fight with Wepner despite the fact that he was probably 45 years old and heroin addict.

Liston had a needle phobia and it's highly unlikely he took heroin.

Joe Louis did. Joe was too paranoid to go out and get the stuff himself and Liston got it for him through his thug contacts.

One of the persistent rumors is that the Mob was giving heroin to Liston because he told them it was for Joe. Liston started selling part of it and he was soon found dead.

But Ecto?..why are so many heroin addicts so unhealthy. The answer is they're addicts, and they don't eat and look after themselves in all they ways non-users take for granted, and of course thriugh building up the natural tolerance opiates need larger amounts. And then there's those 'addicts' who manage their addictions and work professionally.

So could Liston have been using during the latter stages of his career- Absolutely.

If you had an unlimited source of pure or properly cut (without the impurities) heroin, there isn't much reason why you couldn't train and perform close to your best. There's been a few boxing champs who managed addictions while champions. Thing you need to realise is that after using for a period of time, your body is requiring the opiate to normalise itself...not to give you the disposition of a wilted flower.

Issues would occur for your hypothetical heroin-using contender when a) his telerence built up to too great an amount and it became impracticable to maintain the adiction, b) there were issues with his supply and he suffers from withdrawls, and c) if there's crap (impureities) in his supply that act to poison him and his body.

Think Liston was a skin-popper, not a hard user. Geraldine Liston swore black and blue Liston was scared of needles, and could never have used any syringe himself intraveniously. Ergo the conspiracy theories.

For those wondering, hey- I grew up in the 60's and 70's...
