The 1917 rumour seems to have confused him with a cousin.

Of the recent evidence, the 1940 census is certainly the best, putting his birth year as 1930. The other documents seem to place him in 1928.

Okay 1928 to 1930. Reasonable and not much difference there.

I remember that when he was active, Liston was often claiming a birth date of 1934, later changed to 1932.

the census is the best proof we have so far and until proven otherwise I'd take that as his birth year (1930)

Do we know for certain that picture was taken in 1950?

Looking at that pic, i'd guess around 22-23.

If he was born in 1917, that would mean he is 37 in that picture, Providing we know for sure that pic is from 1950 I think we can safely rule out him being born in 1917.

It's great entertainment to see adherents scramble when their myths have been debunked. Keep up the good work!

    Charles Liston

June 1951 (Missouri State Penitentiary - Jefferson City, Missouri)

More spectators there, than in Lewiston, Maine (May 1965)

Charles Liston became 'Sonny' in prison.

He was actually called 'Sonny Boy'.

the top part of what you just said is 100% gold, its the best thing when ever looking deep down into boxing history, that is sometimes forgotten.

the funny thing about the cencus, is that it goes against his prison record, that for about 30 years was the golden rule for listons age, his oldest sister, (who is still alive) said they cut the tree down before 1930, even though the cencus says he was born in 1930, its very bizzare.

Her's a name if anyone wants to check.

Sterling Belt from Jefferson City, Missouri.

One of Charles Liston's 'burglary buddies'. Same age.

Sonny was clearly not born in 1928. The 1930 census, taken in April of that year, lists his older brother as being six months old. The 1940 census also taken in April lists Liston as being 10 years old. Logically this means Liston was most likely born between July and December of 1930.
