A Census taker doesn't ask you to show a birth certificate or bible to verify the age he writes down on the Census Form.

The 1940 Census only states someone's name in that line on the form supposedly resided at that residence......the age could be listed as anything.

Upon what do you base this?

I will try to keep an open mind.

    .

Maybe he wasn't around the day the Census taker dropped by and he got lost in the shuffle on the name itemization.

I would like to see an entire list of all of Liston's brothers, sisters, half-bros, and half-sisters Papa BBC was responsible for, and see how all the family was packed in that farm house.

I'll go with Tywin's approx. date over any other. 1917? That's just nonsense. 41-42 when he fought Big Cat?
But this is the reason I always push for Liston's greatness in posts. Had he not had his head demons and circumstances (I know, many are in the same boat) and had been found early and trained properly, he possibly could have been ready for the Rock circa 53-54. Based on my fantasy scenerio, that one wouldn't have gone well for Rocky.
We're looking at 32-33 for Floyd, 34-35 for Ali....and 39 for Leotis, and 40 for Wepner...
Quite simply, the man had boxing skills and major power with both hands. Unfortunate that he will be remembered as one of those "lost souls". In reading about him, he certainly had a softer, caring side to him as well (loved children, etc)
    R.I.P. Sonny.

He would have been too green to defeat a prime Rocky Marciano

In the movie MoonFire (filmed in 1969), but released later,

Sonny looked to be just over the 40+ age. No way was he close to 50, but no way was he 35.

His parents are going to have a lot better idea of when he was born the closer to that date you get and as it stands 1940 is the closest official record of his birth anyone has by about a decade. I'll take that over anything anyone else can come up with unless a birth certificate or family bible is found.

With Liston's luck.....they probably went down to the Arkansas creek to baptize Liston at birth.....and the creek had dried up.

I would like to see reference for the first point. The second is not at all convincing. The third is downright supposition. Have a looksee at a 22 year old Greg Oden. Some dudes just look old...

Liston didn't look all that physically imposing in the movie MOONFIRE. I watched bits and pieces of it on Youtube, and I was surprised at how ordinary Liston appeared. Nothing like the hulking, menacing fighter that he was always portrayed as.

I genuinely believe Liston was nearing sixty when he died, making him around fifty four against Ali and fifty against Williams.

    Good observation,

His upper-body muscle-mass was not there anymore. Even his biceps were not huge.

The body said, he was over 40+.

    How about that acting,,,,,,,,,,,:patsch

AND... just because a fighter does something good or even great at an advanced age, it doesn't mean that he could have done better had he been younger.

Liston did what he did when he did it. Had he been younger vs. Ali it wouldn't have mattered. Liston was actually 60 years old when he lost the title to Ali, but he was at his best!

Look at Segio Martinez, he is in his prime right now. A younger Martinez was not better.
