Jack Newfield says it was generally accepted that Liston was 45 when he lost to Martin. It don't really make a difference either way, it's just that I've just now watched a documentary on Liston and that's what was thought at the time.
I don't know if you follow US basketball, but he was the #1 pick of my beloved Trailblazers and played the equivalent of 1 season over 4 years. He had the face and body of an 80 year old man but his birth date was 1988. Not sure if we have census reports to back that up?
Greg Oden, Sam Bowie, Bill Walton. What is it that makes it impossible top stay healthy as a center in Portland Seamus?
Based on the first Ali fight, I'd say he was 36 at the time. By the second fight, he was clearly 45, which was why he was "KO'd" so easily (thought it was a dive). That puts him at 60 for the Leotis Martin fight, which logically can't be held against him. Since he was a novice at age 12 for his first professional loss (caused by a broken jaw and snapped spine) we can say that Liston never really lost a fight.
"When I saw him get up from the wheel chair - which was pushed by mobsters - and replace his denture by a mouthpiece, I knew I was in trouble" - Floyd Patterson, 1963.
Sonny Liston 'body size wise' was smaller than actor Charles Napier in Moonfire (Filmed in 1969). Charles Napier, was age 33, 6' 0" and 205 lbs. This content is protected
That's interesting. Liston must have atrophied considerably over the years, but height wise, maybe he was never all that tall to begin with. He was probably closer to Joe Frazier's height.
The movie MoonFire was filmed in the heat of New Mexico, Arizona and West Texas. Sonny could have been dried up a bit. After that filming, he went to Las Vegas to fight Leotis Martin, and suprisingly looked in good shape.
Wow, that video posted on page 2 was great. I'd never seen Sonny speak before, i'd always thought he was some kinda "badass" if you like he seems a relaxed nice guy. How long was his reach btw? his arms (folded) look really, really long.
