With Johansson, Quarry, Bugner & Chuvalo added to his resume, I'd have ranked Liston in the top 10 ATG Heavyyweights, provided he won against all four.
Most definitely would have added a little more icing on the cake for Sonny. Not Sonny's fault that Ingo pulled out of his December 1961 bout, and later pulled out a potential September 1963 fight with Liston. Liston-Quarry was on the table for the late-summer/early-fall of 1968, but Jerry hurt his leg in a water-skiing accident in the summer. Liston-Chuvalo, another one set for early-1969, but contract problems arose. Also, same problem with the proposed bout in Alaksa for 1966. Liston-Bugner, for late-1970 (?), not sure of Jozsef wanted that yet.
Willie Pastrano lost to gooftroopers Roy Harris, Brian London, alonzo johnson, and joe erskine. You have to be on drugs if you think he has any shot vs liston. He wouldn't last 3 rounds.
Listons resume is already easily top 10 without these turkeys. Liston cleaned out the best guys of his era, effectively and cleanly...only missing on Johansson(who wanted no part of him)
Of all the possible Sonny Liston 'never happened bouts',,,,,,, The most intriguing would be versus 'INGO' Ingemar Johansson. Either in December 1961 before Sonny won the title, or September 1963 after he won the title.
Yep. I would never count out the effectiveness of Al Salvani in the preparation of his fighter though. Very capable of springing an upset of sorts. Big advantage in the corner for Ingo in this. And those superior corners have a way of being the side with their hands raised at the end of the fight when they take on the inferior corner in a big fight. The trouble is, not too many guys with inferior corners even bother to make it to the big fight stage. Sonny made it farther than anyone with that corner of his. Just imagine subtracting Blackburn/Seamon from Louis. Goldman from Marciano. Dundee from Ali, and so on. The champs always had top notch corners, except for Sonny Liston.
Hmm, I would've said Quarry myself given his chin and skills I think he could've turned the trick IMO. A fight with Ingo would've probably been over after a half decent shot clipped Ingo's chin he wouldn't let survive after he hurt him. I think for the most part he would be chasing him around the ring sticking out his massive jab. Ingo too small and not durable enough to hang in there with Liston. A fight with Chuvalo would've been an absolute war a man Liston's size with a granite chin, load of heart and pretty good punch.
Sonny versus INGO,,, After eating one of Sonny's 'pile-driver' left jabs,,,,,,,,,,,could see INGO going into 'survival-mode' and quite possibly go the distance, in losing every round. Best chance for INGO, the 1st round, where he may have landed one of those right hand bombs on a cold Sonny.
i still can't believe certain people think willie pastrano could give Liston problems. What do you think Liston would have done to gooftroopers like Roy Harris, Brian London, alonzo johnson, and joe erskine.
Sonny versus 'the big' Young Jack Johnson in 1961 would have been an interesting bout. Young Jack was really John Lee Storey from Texas. He was Floyd Patterson's sparring partner in 1961. The former California Heavyweight Champion also gave Enrie Terrell one heck of a fight in Chicago, in December 1962. Young Jack was on the wrong end of a disputed decision. A 'big boy' at 6' 3" and 225 lbs., who had beat up Zora Folley and Ezzard Charles in back-to-back fights in 1955.
