Some big powerful men for the times. Liston went right through these fighter's best punches, walked them down, and battered them into submission.

Not enough to rate him above Young, for this, Suze. Young beat FOREMAN, Shavers, Lyle, Norton, Cooney and Dokes.

And they were NOT the biggest threat to the title. liston rounded up and wiped out what was around pre 1961, including the best contenders like machen and folley who were regular sized heavyweights of that era. Those big dudes were 2nd teir.

Between 1965 and his retirement I dont remember Liston fighting bonnavena, chuvalo or terrell who were the big contenders of his later era.

And would you back any of them to beat a prime Liston?

No they weren't. Cleveland Williams was rated top 10 when Liston beat him the 2nd time, and would go on to become top 5 rated for the next four years. Williams was a monster puncher with blazing speed and electrifying reflexes.

Mike DeJohn was top 10 rated. A towering guy with a huge left hook.

Nino Valdes was past his prime, but he was still a big dangerous two fisted puncher with an abundance of strength.

All 3 of these men would have been huge threats to Floyd Patterson. If Floyd could be knocked down by Brian London, Pete Radamacher, Tom Mcneely....what do you think these men could have done to Floyd?

Yes, Ali hit lightly. He was also a consensus top 2 heavyweight of all-time. Incidentally.

cleveland williams and mike dejohn were the same level as most of the white american and european contenders you like to call gooftroopers. maybe williams and dejohn were bigger but brian london and jackson were not much better. valdes was an old man on the skids at that time.

Nope. Watch the films. None of those soft 5'11 190lb european contenders could deal with the 6'3 215lb monsterous punching power, speed, and cat like reflexes of a prime cleveland williams.

Nino Valdes destroyed all of those white european gooftroopers whom you like to ballwash.

They were much bigger, and better punchers too.

In your opinion. Brian London went the distance with quarry and beat folley, both better at knocking out rated fighters than williams.

Baldy Radmacher beat chuvalo where as willimas lost to chuvalo.

its negligable that williams was that much better.

ingo johannson knocked out machen, cooper and the rest of europe.

But not charlie powell or alonzo johnson around the time he met Liston. Nino did not destroy London -that was a lousy cut eye stopage that did not credit either man. Nino also beat a shot, hog fat 218lb cockell on a cut but that was much earlier when valdes was still something.

They were bigger, I will give you that. fringe guys one and all.

Truth is folley, ingo, Liston and machen were the guys patterson should have been fighting not dejohn, valdes and cleveland williams.

He beat a washed up Zora Folley. Congratulations.

Chuvalo beat an even more washed up Cleveland Williams. Congratulations again.

    Like......Sweet dude

Lousy cut eye stoppage? How about Brian London not being able to stop Valdes's fist from making raw meat out of his eye.

Valdes was still something in early 1959...rated # 2 in the world. Patterson wanted no part of him.

Patterson without a doubt should have fought Valdes in 1958, and should have fought Cleveland Williams in 1961
