Personally, I believe Liston to be the worst matchup for Fraizer in Heavyweight History. Fraizers pressure style doesn’t really work on a 84 inch sniper of an arm which has the strongest jab behind it in the history of the division. And with a right arm like a cannon ball in the extremely unlikely chance he breaks through Listons jab, I dont see how he survives this one.

Agree with you although Foreman is about as bad.

I think Liston is a tad worse, worse by exactly 2 inches.

Do we actually have any bouts where Liston fights anybody actually that good? We don’t even have a good example of him fighting hard? Against the best guy he fought he got beat with relative ease.
Listons jab wouldn’t even be a factor here, he pushed off it nearly every time he threw it.
Sonny never tried stopping people coming to him, Frazier would get in every time and work him a lot harder than Eddie Machen or Cleveland Williams lol.

As I've been on this board nigh on 20 years, I can't remember which poster this was, but it was an oldtimer who was well respected, no upstart, who messaged me regarding this match-up. He was a Philly guy from wayback and swore that Yank wanted keep Joe as far away from an OLD Liston as humanly possible, that he saw it was a bad match-up all around. Wish I could remember who the poster was. I assume he has met his maker at this point. He was very old 15 years ago.

To be fair, it was common sense. Frazier would've probably beat an old Liston back then but it was high risk, low reward. Their were higher rated, easier stylistic matchups for Frazier.

If any manager made that fight, they'd be fired.

There was no upside for Frazier facing ANY version of Liston.

I agree. If I had been Joe Frazier's Manager I would have been sure to keep Joe in a different time zone from wherever Sonny was fighting. That would have been a stupid risk to take, with zero upside for Joe.

On the flip side Joe wouldn't be afraid to take the fight. The man was scared of nobody.

Foreman was worse. Liston didn’t have that raw aggression the same way.

As good as Fraizer, no. Theres no direct comparison. Same problem Joe Louis had.

Both of those fights were unfair for Liston and very bad situations.
If anything that ads to the aggression and pressure he can push on Fraizer?
Sonny didnt need to, but Joe is someone who shouldn't and wouldn't be allowed to get inside.

Agree 100%--even an aging Liston would have posed a LOT of problems for Frazier if they had fought in the late 60's. (Fighting Sonny really was an everything to lose-nothing to gain proposition for Frazier and Yank Durham was smart enough to realize this!)

I agree. Which is why he's my all time favorite fighter (ironically along with Liston).
