Someone mad and butthurt. Wonder if you would shoot anyone who can say anything but good about your hero?
Your annoying and obnoxious. No one here likes you at all except my friend who just wants some laughs. I know plenty of people who dont even consider Liston top 5 and I get along with them just fine because theyre civilized and normal people unlike a troglodyte like you
Sorry...you can't pick and choose to make your point. You look at the overall picture. He KO'd china chin Floyd Patterson in the first round in 1962 and again in 1963. Then...in the 2 biggest fights of his life...he s**t himself in front of the whole world. Not much of a title "reign". QUIT sitting on his stool against Ali as CHAMP in 1964...then took a DIVE against Ali up in Maine in May 1965. You don't base the Liston myth on his "Stare down"...that's kid stuff". He decks Leotis Martin in Dec. 1969 live on ABC TV...then Martin cuts Sonny....Liston's swallowing his own blood...then folds up...and gets KO'd by Martin with a right hand. He's on the canvas for 5 minutes...gets up...and Howard Cosell asks him "What Happened?" Sonny doesn't know..."If I knew...maybe it wouldn't happen". He wasn't TOUGH MENTALLY!!! Why is that so difficult to understand? He was slow...ponderous...and this myth about Liston has grown...just more "Revisionist' history from people too young to have been there...and from people who don't take time to do research! "Wow...It took 5 cops to bring Sonny to jail...Wow" How'd that work out against the light hitting Cassius Clay in 1964...and Ali in 1965? Overrated!...Just like Tyson! Once things go wrong...or don't go their way...they fold up...and the fight is over!
Your supply of crap is endless. You criticise Sonny as being slow and ponderous.I suggest you watch Sonny when he was at his peak.Take a look at the Bethea and Williams fights. There was nothing slow or ponderous about Sonny in those fights.Marciano himself wasn't exactly speedy or fleet-footed and Liston was technically his superior.I'm not disrespecting Marciano who was obviously a fine fighter, but really take a look at the fights involving both men and you'll see that Sonny was a better technician. But no doubt you will still continue with your pathetic anti-Liston agenda. By all means refer to Liston taking less than a round to defeat Floyd Patterson in their 2 championship bouts. Of course Floyd had a shaky chin but he was an extremely fine fighter.Would you like to tell me how many other fighters defeated Patterson so emphatically ? The narratives surronding Liston's fights with Muhammad Ali have been explored, investigated and explained countless times and I'm sure you are aware of the back-story to those fights. You constantly accuse Liston of lacking heart because of the controversial endings to the Ali fights.I've asked this question before and I'll ask it again......are Duran and Vitali cowards because of the way their fights with Leonard and Lewis ended ?
Not really relevant but still a cool quote nonetheless Rocky Marciano said of Liston: "He isn't faking his toughness, and his strength is just something you got to see, and that jab, he can knock a man out with the jab!" When asked how he would have fought him, the Rock shook his head and said "I'd have done my best, but Lord God he is strong..."
Indeed the Rock respected Liston and the respect was mutual. Both Rocky and Sonny knew a true warrior when they saw one.
Based on what would Liston get in top because I wouldn't rate him in top 10 maybe top 15. Only you're butthurt here, forum should be called Liston paroles chase you if you say something about their hero that they don't like. Ali, Marciano, Dempsey, Foreman, Holmes, Holyfield, Frazier, Jack Johnson, Joe Louis, Lennox Lewis...I rate them all above the Liston based on resume.
Liston was the complete opposite of relying on his physicality. In the heavyweight division, he in my opinion was one of the best technicians. Watching him KO Williams and Patterson, he looks like he is wasting no punches and they land very accurately. Compared that to George (Love you,but it's the truth) Who just ****ing flails like Kermit the Frog until the guy goes down (Even though his jab was imo the best in history) I would say Ali was a fighter that relied FAR more on his athletisism than anything. (He still is the Greatest though, but keeping it real)
It's striking to me how guys on this forum revere Sonny Liston. Let me tell you, because I'm old enough to have been a boxing fan when he was in his prime . . . he didn't have many admirers back then. The press made sure of that. Almost to a man, they ****ing hated him! He was extremely unpopular even before he lost to Clay. Too bad Sonny never got to experience the hero worship of guys like you.
