I forgive you for all your crazy ideas Tommy - you make the best videos in history - this might be my favourite one I've ever seen - Sonny Liston was a monster - a beast!!
There were clever boxers, less clever than Young that flummoxed Liston...Machen, Whitehurst and Marty Marshall...whether Ali heeded them or not, they set the template for beating Liston. Young was a spoiler for guys like Foreman and Liston.
Machen was no less clever than Jimmy Young. Unfortunately he did not enjoy the privilege of dealing with technically flawed fighters such as latter 70's and 230+ lb Ali, a post-Zaire Foreman, Ron Lyle who took up boxing in his late 20's and Norton who took up boxing in his mid 20's. Liston was technically very solid along with being a brutal puncher. His slow feet wouldn't bother him much against Young who was hardly fleet-footed, just elusive with his subtle movements. Marty Marshall was far from a clever boxer, just a very weird and odd fighter who apparently amused Liston to the extent where he laughed out loud and got his jaw broken for it. Whitehurst was outpointed all the way, just did enough to survive as Jimmy Young would.
Thanks Rocky. But honestly your boy marciano would get pummled by Liston.. Just saying... I don't understand why you would bring that up in a Liston thread. Okay Cobra but you're kind of negating your own point here. You act like he's getting exposed by these guys or something... Machen definitely won a few rounds, but Liston clearly won that. Whitehurst got saved by the bell and got knocked brutally into the ropes Marty Marshall got stopped on bodyshots in the rematch after beating a green sonny liston. So what's your point...? Young might frustrate Liston early on but he doesn't have anything to keep Liston off. He has a nice right hand counter but that won't be good enough to keep liston off. at least machen had some pop, young was a complete feather puncher and would get bull dozed by liston
These guys that Liston steamrolled just basically stood there waiting to be hit...most of the tim e they came about it that way honestly because of their styles..and trying..as a boxer should do most of the time by trying to win...and their best just wasn't good enough...Machen came closest to pushing the envelope, by trying to survive...and that was Young's SPECIALTY...and Liston was confuswed by a guy who would think outside of the box...ok, I'll concede that maybe..maybe...Young wouldn't win, but he would ahave made Liston look very bad and would have succeeded in going the distance with him..but you guys are making it seem like Liston couldn't be confused, flummoxed and outboxed...Young was by far cleverer than those guys that I mentioned, Marshall, Machen and Whitehurst. Young was a survivor par excellance, and remember, Liston wasn't as big or as fast as Foreman was. If Young wouldn't beat Liston, he sure as hell wouldn't be "destroyed" himself, and like I said, would have made Liston look bad in the process...whoever won the fight on points.
Oh, and by the way Tommy...what I've posted in no way is mean't to denigrate the theme of your video here...you succeeded again as usual with a top notch presentation..it spells out VERY well what an intimidator Liston really was!
I don't see Liston running through Young by any means but I struggle to see what Young could do better against Liston that Machen couldn't. I'm not saying that Machen and Young are directly comparable but they faced the same problems, a long reach disadvantage from a distance and an inability to match Liston in close. Liston was also a better boxer than given credit for, it was pure speed that really troubled him (though not necessarily coming at him as proven against Patterson). I see Young being forced into survival mode and unable to outscore Liston who would keep the jab working at all times.
Howdy Cobra. I agree with you that Young had the skills to make Sonny look bad for a bit, but this comment puzzled me. Watching films of a prime Liston shows a fighter who is definitely quicker and faster than Foreman. The right that floored Westphal and the left hook that first floored Williams (fight l) were lightning quick shots. I never saw anything from GF that I would describe as lightning quick.
Tommy you have like 3 vids of Sonny now and I'm still not tired of seeing them though I'm a Patterson fan. You guys are making Liston/Young sound good and yes I'm a fan of Young too but I see Sonny winning. Good fantasy matchup I wish I could see it happen in the digital world.
