I have seen the autopsy/PM report, it does not state he died of a heroin overdose, all indications are he died of heart failure. Most strong pain killers in the 70's containing opiates-type compounds and would have given a positive on a heroin test. The technology wasn't available to distinguish heroin from codeine, a common over the counter pain killer, for example. A man as old as Sonny, and in his profession for so long, would certainly have aches and pains, don't all of us over 40's ache just getting up in the morning? Codeine has a half life of 2-3 days so it is entirely feasible he took pain killers up to a week before and gave a positive test at autopsy. Additionally, and as as pointed out above right-handed drug users almost exclusively administer intravenously into the left fold of the elbow. Finally, no top level athlete could compete as a heroin addict, and although Sonny's star was waning he was still considered elite level. Sorry for ruining so many great stories and theories but at least it keeps his name alive. In life he never got the recognition he deserved and the fact he died so young is a tragedy. He was more than 'A Man', he was a great man who turned his life around to come from nothing to paint his name in stars across the sky. They'll still be talking about him 50, 100 years from now.
I for one am glad about the negative on the heroin.that only leaves his age and the 2 Ali 'fights' to sort out !!!
Here's the version I read that makes the most sense. Liston and Joe Louis were best friends and lived about a mile apart in Las Vegas. Joe had become a heroin addict, but was too paranoid to go out and get it. Liston got it for him through his Mob connections. They gave it to Liston free, because they knew it was for Joe Louis. Liston started selling part of it. The thugs found out and ordered a hit. Two prostitutes that Liston frequented when his wife was out of town, drugged Liston during a party at his home. The hit team came in and shot Liston up with an overdose.
Il Duce-how about the case of Oscar Bonavena?I have always been interested of what happened at that chicken ranch which he lost his life?If you have the time school me.
Um, isn't heroin something that one can't just be a light user of? It's usually kind of all or nothing, I believe.
As I understand it, he was caught falsifying records (or, more accurately, the information contained within records) over at Boxrec. He surely had great stories, but you didn't know when to trust him. It's a shame. I found him & his threads to be tremendously entertaining.
He was a liar. Most of what he posted was entirely made up. As for the comment that you cant use heroin and an elite boxer go look at mike ayalas performance against danny lopez. He shot up immediately before that fight (although ive seen him both confirm and deny that story) and it was incredible.
Found this link which looks interesting - anyone know if this book did get published?? http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/...rdered-by-mob-claims-hitmans-son-8803558.html
I don't know, but I doubt the story. Mob protocol is to not tell the hit man the reason for the hit. They are expected to carry it out, no questions asked and no details given. The father may have told him that he knocked off Liston, but it's doubtful he told him the reason, or even knew the reason.
