    Williams would have knocked out Lavorante, would have beaten a way past his prime bob baker, and would have flattened little willie pastrano. I can't see Roy Harris beating Ernie Terrell, hurting Sonny Liston, or fighting to a draw with Eddie Machen.


    Williams is way too big, fast, powerful for Roy Harris. Harris ducked Williams for years. Both were from Texas. Harris wanted no part of Williams.

    Being from Texas, Roy should have known not to bring a knife to a gun fight. Liston is definitely a watershed fighter in the division. Significant size and strength combined with skill. The division has not been the same since.

    maybe williams was unlucky landing fights with beatable name opponents who actualy had a rating when he met them?

    The draw with machen was good. However reports I read say:

    "Eddie Machen, 198, and Cleveland Williams, 211 1/2, ruined their immediate chances for a heavyweight title shot last night with a cautiously fought 10 round draw. Both Machen, the No. 2 heavyweight contender, and Williams, ranked No. 5, climbed into the ring hoping to come out with a clearcut right to challenge the Sonny Liston-Floyd Patterson winner for the title. Machen came out unscarred, Williams had a cut on the mouth and a mouse over his right eye. Machen scored heavily with his effective counter-punching." -The Fresno Bee"

    Williams was without doubt a handfull, he fought to win and was a big guy but he just never landed those kind of fights that other contenders managed. he walked out of a fight with dick richardson because he had a breakdown, he was not stable enough to count on against proven fighters because he did not beat any. Terrell, never a world beater himself had not found himself yet as a pro when he met williams he was also unranked at the time. Terrell had turned a corner after the rematch.

    Terrell was most certainly a world beater, a good fighter, future WBA champion who was 23-3 at the time Williams knocked him out. Did you see the rematch? I did I have the tape. I thought Williams won. AP had Williams winning 48-47 on their card.
