I'm working on a article about Sonny Liston and need some help. I guess most of classic posters know his story (both inside and outside the ring), but I'm looking for some details from his life that could make my work more interesting for the nonhardcore boxing fans. Here are some examples: Sonny Liston was afraid of needles 24th of 25 children of his father Liked to swim in a nearby lake when was young Could only write down his own name Didn't know how old he was Liked children, hated cops and journalists Liston is illustrated on the famous Beatles album cover Sgt Peppers Lonely Heart Club HW champion with biggest fists in history (15 inches) Weared 22 oz gloves on sparings and his sparingpartners had rib protectors because Sonny often broke them and sparings were delayed or canceled When arrested in 1950 Liston wore yellow shirt which helped to identify him Ate with other inmates while touring prisons as a HW champ etc. any new would be great! Maybe we could also straight up some news about Sonny and find out which are true and which are false (like the brawl in LV casino with Ali)
It's said that in sparring he'd burst the stitching of his opponents headgear, people have said he'd send the speed bag flying across the room. (I'm just getting this from documentaries)
Consensus is that he was so old for the Clay fight, that he had actually risen from the dead. The first world war had a heavy toll on his body... but the damn maffia dragged him out of his retirement home, made him get rid of his walking cane (which is shown on several non-ring pictures) and made him fight Clay.... poor *******. All of this will be confirmed by contemporary media reports going into that fight.
I read somewhere that he got the name "Sonny" off his father who could't remember the kids names and called them all "Sonny"
"Cos I ain't got no dogproof ass" ! Quote from Liston when asked why he never went on Civil Rights marches.
I think he was around 80 years old when he fought Clay and almost 90 when he died of old age. His cause of death was listed as being due to "natural causes" after all.
You people think Liston was eighty or ninety years old when he fought Clay? That's ****ing ridiculous.
