Prime Liston would have put Ali in the ER. Even in their first real bout, Sonny may have been a shade past it but still formidable. I think Liston was overconfident and out of shape more than anything else. His weight was a little higher than usual if I remember correctly. He may have expected an early knockout. Comparing PRIME Liston to Ali is insulting to Sonny. Sonny was bigger, stronger and better than tAli. Do not mistake skittishness for mobility. Liston still had very much of the latter and had lost the former. Aliis soooooooooooooooo over rated it is not even funny. His whole repertoire is based on Patterson, Foreman and beating Liston while cheating.
It is funny how people blast Muhammad Ali for getting decked by Sonny Banks in Feb 1962 and Henry Coper in June 1963. Yet no one talks about the positives of Muhammad Ali's career, no one talks about Ali's second meeting against Henry Copper on May 21 1966, is it because Henry did not deck him in 1966? A lot of fighters have been decked before, sometimes it is a learning experience, a certain champion who lost his title in Tokyo in 1990 got decked, yet he did not beat the count, and fans make excuses for him, but when it comes to Ali all these conspiracy theories arrive.
Mike Tyson and Ali both had iron chins. Ali’s was the greater at taking a shot and it’s been shown countless times that he was made of concrete.
Seriously? You think that beating Foreman when he was prime is not that big of a deal. You think beating Floyd Patterson was one of Ali's defining victories? It is a fine scalp but not the reason Ali is arguably boxing's greatest figure. How exactly did Ali (or Clay) cheat against Sonny? Did he rub liniment on Sonny's gloves? Sorry. Any skullduggery in those fights was going on in Sonny's corner. Oh. And Joe Frazier says hello. You'll get yourself a repertoire for being silly if you make too many more posts like that.
** I was mocking some of the other users who have used these exact quotes in other threads with the same topic but I compiled them in a satirical manner ** 100% agree with you
Liston's "repertoire is based on" not only cleaning out the entire division but the manner he did so, culminating in a pair of back to back 1st round KOs (which are very arguably the best pair of wins in the heavyweight division) over the undisputed champion who was prime and coming off his best performances. You continue to repeat the notion that Liston's reputation is based on beating 2 opponents and, not only is it not even remotely true but it has me questioning how much you actually know about Liston.
He beat Folley, Williams, Machen in the same year if memory serves he put in the work. He beat Patterson in a brutal fashion twice. But he does not compare to Ali or come close to exceeding him like the other poster was trying to make out. I was being snarky Liston is a great HW.
There are several choices. If I had to say one that I think would beat him that is unexpected - I think Cooney blasts him out in 2 rounds. A dream fight for me would be Ray Mercer vs Liston.
Fair enough. I agree, the post was preposterous as well but the OP later clarified he was being sarcastic.
lol Cooney wouldn't even get in the ring with him unless it was the 40+ Liston who faced Wepner in his final fight
