https://www.boxingoverbroadway.com/wp-content/uploads/Liston-Benbow-Williams.jpg Some background info. This photograph was taken February 2nd, 1965. Williams was in the hospital after being shot by Patrolman Witten (who actually reconciled with Williams and wished him luck before his bout with Ali) following an altercation after being pulled over. Just thought you guys would've wanted to see this.
The dark side of Liston is often mentioned and there’s obviously no doubt out of the ring he was a badass. There also seems to be plenty of evidence that he had softer more compassionate side.
I think he was just a guy who liked to be left alone And due to his mob connections and force in the ring he was made a villian
What kind of monster traumatizes a boxer they KO'd by visiting him while he's in the hospital? Has he never heard of PTSD? It's almost like Liston wasn't some 1 dimensional boogeyman.
Very nice photo. Williams looks really frail in this, even though he's smiling. I read he dropped well below 200 pounds while he was in the hospital. Williams' experience has led me to appreciate Manuel Charr even more. Charr was shot multiple times in the stomach in 2015 and had both of his hips replaced in 2017 as a result, and he not only lived, he came back to win all three of his comeback fights including his bout with Ustinov for one of the WBA's many heavyweight belts. Pretty remarkable, actually, regardless of how people view him as a fighter.
That’s actually a very classy gesture from Sonny. I think Liston wanted to be a good champ, he just didn’t trust anybody and who could blame him? The guy paid his dues in the ring, but there was always something hanging heavily over Sonny. It would have been interesting to see him mellow with age like George Foreman did. He seemed pretty cool as farmer in the moonfire film. This content is protected
This was laugh out loud funny because its true. Talk about cruel and unusual punishment. the police are probably laughing the other side of the room.
Knowing you, you'd probably give that biker a 50/50 chance against Liston if he wasn't caught off guard.
I agree totally. Everyone seems to make Liston out to be this unwanted champion. There are numerous pictures of Liston smiling on the internet, etc. Plus he was in movies and tv shows, my favorite is his appearance in The Monkees psychedelic acid trip Head.
