    More of a clumsy fight.
Like two people trying to dance, and can't get a rythym.
If Eddie Machen didn't tear a ligament in his right arm before the fight, he may have made things interesting.
Not a great fight for the #1 and #2 contenders.
Fast Eddie should have been called 'The Neutralizer'.

    Lots of even rounds.
It was a good turn-out, 7300 people in Seattle.
$20 tickets for the ringside perimeter.

On the other hand, seven years later Machen made it into the tenth against Joe Frazier and was stopped on his feet (I think, only saw a HL and that was a while ago)

Eddie Machen was a fine fighter, IMo...if he didn't have so many demons, who knows what he would have achieved.

I admire Machen in this fight, he showed both brains and balls in hanging in there and refusing to be just another ko victim of Sonny's. Some may disagree with that, but they would have had Machen offering up himself as a sacrificial lamb, frozen with fear, like so many of Sonny's opponents. Yes, Machen showed he had brains and balls in this fight...even taunting Liston at times..

Eddie did show that Sonny was somewhat limited in his approach.
Especially in hand speed and thinking skills.

Ingo saw that fight, and had one word for Sonny,,,SLOWWWW.

I think the Ingo of 1958/'59 would have fought Liston, and would have been fairly confident too.
Johansson was pretty good, he might have looked basic, but he set his traps, and hit hard and fast.
He was a flash-in-the-pan fighter though, who enjoyed the bright lights, the partying, and the *****. He was never a demon for training, and he lost any semblance of hunger and discipline as soon as he won the title.

Don't think Ingo would have a chance of winning.
But wouldn't you have liked the chance to see him land one big-right on the
    left side of Sonny's jaw.
Just to see what would happen.

I did pull up an article about Sonny's fight in May 1968 vs. Billy Joiner at
    The Olympic in Los Angeles.
    Pretty pathetic review.

Billy Joiner, 9-3-3 (4 KO's). The fight was so bad, the paid spectators threw things in the ring, and boo'ed Sonny unmercifully.
Cat calls of,,,,, 'Take a dive bum, the ocean is right around the corner'

The promoter was going to schedule a bout for Sonny vs. Mel Turnbow after this one in June. He called it off.
Sonny had no legs, no punch or no reflexes against a light-punching Cincinatti-based former amateur star out of Ohio.

ingo would have been tapping sonny with that jab and when he felt listons own jab he would have thought "what the **** is that" and the end would of been nigh.he could have belted liston with his hammer of thor and may well have used a lump hammer.no response.
    liston was too hard

Ingo's only chance is catching liston with a perfect right hand. otherwise liston stops and brutalizes him in 5 rounds.

Sonny did have a little tendency to freeze for a moment when hit with a good shot.
Would have to think that the 'howitzer' like jab, would have lumped up Ingo.

I liked this fight very much. Interesting contrast of styles, nice pace, some controversies and solid shots. Very good HW fight in my eyes.

A thing about Eddie Machen, he didn't give a **** about Liston's reputation and all that "ex-con bogeyman" stuff, he had no reason to be intimidated by that crap because he was an ex-convict armed robber too.
He spends much of the fight cursing Liston out and provoking Liston to play rough.
