It wasnt. Chuvalo had declined a little less though. Discounting Listons age, whatever it may have been, he was nearly physically spent from many years of abusing his body with Dope and Booze. Legs gone, desire no longer there, stamina waning, just able to take a punch, he was fighting for paychecks alone. In 69 or 70, I would give Chuvalo a live chance.
A prime Liston tko's and butchers Chuvalo..maybe not decking him but thrashing George as decisively as Frazier and Foreman did..I'm talking '60 to ''63 Liston. Post '65 Liston has a real fight on his hands with a determined, rugged Chuvalo...he may have copped a decision but that would be all.
I don't know if my logic answers the question, but I figure that if green versions of Foreman and Frazier with umpteen number of fights managed to stop Chuvalo, then a peak Liston who crippled the whole division proabably could as well.. My two cents.....
Young, on the rise versions of Frazier, Foreman. 59/62 Liston beats Chuvalo without much trouble. However, 69/70 maybe not.
Liston cut stoppage after landing the jab consistently and tearing up Georges face. Somewhere around the 10th.
My take: Peak Liston destroys peak Chuvalo Spent Liston still defeats spent Chuvalo, but it is not so onesided
Seems to me that George lost every major fight he was ever in, except the controversial Quarry win, so it would be tough to pick him against one of the most formidable dudes ever.
Watch those fightd. Chuvalo was doing pretty good --- especially against Frazer. And against Forman --- not bad. Both Frazer & Forman knock Listen out.
Listen --- not impressed. Watch Patterson - Chuvalo. Chuvalo - Ali. Now -- remember Ali - Listen. Wake up.
