Sonny Liston vs George Foreman

Liston's power certainly was no joke and not all that far off from Foreman. As well as more skilled and better conditioned.

 

Liston certainly had power in Foremans league, and his skills and fundementals were a bit better, certainly his punches were alot cleaner, but Sonny didnt have exceptional speed, defense, or durability. Which are attributes clearly needed to beat a prime Foreman

 

Foreman doesn't pay attention to Liston using his super chemical punch and mercilessly hammers the **** out of him, even while blind. Literally hammers the **** out of him. Liston will be in a puddle.

 

Good. Those are the same attributes needed to beat a prime Liston as well which makes this fight a toss up.

Although this doesnt necessarily have to turn into a brawl (where I'd still give Sonny 50/50). It isnt out of the question for Liston to win a clean decision primarily utilizing his reach advantage and superior jab. He wasnt exactly an endurance warrior or technician specialist although I'd comfortably rate him better than George in both areas.

Foreman wins by early (or mid rds at worst) stoppage , 2 much power and size 4 Liston , Foreman was no Patterson , Williams , Folley , nor was he Leotis Martin , Marty Marshall , Johnny Summerlin or Eddie Machen .
Nor was he Cassius Clay as evident by Chuvalo , Norton and Frazier .
Foreman was remote in his ability from any1 Liston ever faced and was remote from Liston himself . D opposite in d other direction is wrong , Liston was not that much better if at all than Ron Lyle or Ken Norton .

 

Liston can beat george behind the jab and he can outslug him in a war.

The one thing I hold against liston in terms of skillset is his speed (that's why i'd favour ali and louis to beat him) but here he'll actually be fast compared to george.

Liston can stop him around the 10th after controlling the early action and picking off george when he gasses.

 

Liston is severely underrated. If anyone could stand up to Foreman, it was Liston (see their sparring session).

Liston was better schooled as well.

the big question is, how would each guy react to the others power?

Remember Foreman walked right through Fraziers left hook and i dont think Liston fought anyone close to Foremans power.

Id pick Liston purely based on technique (hoping his punches have an effect on Foreman)

 

I once read that Sonny Liston and George Foreman had engaged in sparring sessions and that Foreman admitted that Liston was able to back him up during those encounters. I know sparring is different from a real bout however I can see Liston winning this one behind that long, brutal left jab. I also think that prime for prime Liston had better stamina than Foreman and also measured up well power wise with him as well. I would buy a ticket to see this fight as it would be dynamite while it lasted.

 

Foreman was 21 by d time Liston was murdered .
When did they spar ? during Foreman's teens ? during his amateur career ? or was it during his 1st 2yrs as a pro ?
If there ever was some1 (outside of Valuev) whom stood a real chance at beating George during his prime it would have been prime Oliver McCall , but certainly not Liston . Now Liston vs Puritty would have made a good fight .
