The only thing I can see that even might be what he's referring to is that Liston will sometimes slip/duck/block without appearing to improve his position or trying to fire back. But it's more likely that I'm missing something than that Sonny was making basic defensive errors that others didn't notice.

Well you've offered nothing really. Trying to sell Liston's multi faceted defense as out of date and his head movement as not smooth isn't going to cut the mustard on a forum of this quality. There's a lot of sharp people in here.

Loads of ATG's at lighter weights have made numerous defensive moves that don't improve their position. It's often part of the long term feeling out process and getting a read on their opponent. Liston wasn't one to bang forward constantly like a Frazier or Tyson he was a boxer-puncher.

When you say "coming forward while blocking," I am less sure of what you are referring to. You're supposed to keep your guard up when advancing, yes?

 

I could use rah sense he is compared for some odd reason which rah was more advanced or I could use a no name which would be the right fit that people dont use which is odd sense his movement was like sons
