Excellent photo,,,,,,MR.KALASINN, July 6, 1968 The Cow Palace Sonny's shorts, had purple trim. He was in very good physical form,,,,,,,but 36,,,,,,,,,???? Referee Frank Carter,,,,,,,,,was not in good shape!!!
Thanks II Duce, I find your Liston-posts very interesting to read. :good Sonny looks to be in his late 40s by my estimation & it should be noted that those with dark black skin are supposed to age much slower facially.
Thank you for the compliment. Just trying to add accurate facts! That wasn't a 'bad gig' for $20,000 in July 1968! I'd make Sonny a solid '42'.,,,,,Lets give the guy a break.
$20,000 seems so cheap for such a wonderful fight, even considering it's vastly higher value back then! I didn't mean to be insulting, Sonny is one of my highest ranked favourites. I reckon he appears to be around 45 or 46 years old.
The early hard life may have really taken a toll on Liston. Or just his regular life wore him out faster than we think. I have to check, but he did win the 1953 Chicago Inter-City Golden Gloves Championship. If he was, say age 42 in 1968. Then he would be 27, while competing in the Golden Gloves.
one of the better pieces i have read about liston was in a book about ali and covered patterson too.the trouble is i can't remember which one. in that article i mentioned, archie says he'd heard all the tales about foster battering sonny but they weren't true and he also advised frazier to avoid liston for the time being
Yes, I think the Renwick book is more likely than Thomas Hauser's one. It starts with Liston-Patterson 1962 and finishes after Ali-Floyd.
:goodi just checked the thomas hauser book, its not that.if it is renwick's book, its one of the better books on ali that i have read
