What would "having some left" have to do with Liston supposedly being murdered by the mob? Thats the thing about these conspiracy theories. There is no motive. Like I said, the only one Ive ever heard was that he was supposed to throw the fight to Wepner and didnt but again that makes zero sense. In that instance you throw a fight for two reasons: 1. Because you are a heavy favorite with heavy money being wagered on you. The people arranging the fix bet on the opponent, you throw the fight, they make a lot of money. The problem there is that the fight wasnt a big fight and given Sonny's age and reputation at that point AND coming off a loss the idea that he would have been a huge favorite in a fight where there was heavy betting (on a Chuck Wepner fight of all things) on essentially a club fight is ridiculous. The second reason would be to build up a prospect by having him beat big name that he wouldnt otherwise be expected to beat. That scenario makes no sense either because Wepner had already been around long enough for people to know he was pretty average and beating an ancient Sonny Liston coming off a loss wasnt exactly going to propel him into the stratosphere. He hadnt won a fight against anyone even marginally worth a **** in two years and had just been brutally knocked out on television. So merely having "some left" isnt really a reason to kill the guy. Besides, like I said earlier, there were a lot of other people who had done a lot worse damage to the mob than Sonny Liston so why kill an aging prizefighter who was on the doorstep to retirement but still a public figure and risk drawing that kind of attention to yourself?? Where is the upside? Merely getting revenge? Thats not really how these things work. If he had wronged them as some seem to think they would have other, more profitable ways of squeezing him. And Im not really convinced that a guy who spent his entire adult life doing what he was told by his mob handlers (and being quite profitable for them) suddenly decided to double cross them by not throwing a fight to Chuck freaking Wepner. A winning Sonny Liston was still worth more than three Chuck Wepners ever would have been.
