Too simplistic Mcvey, I think it was 17 times and about 10-11 of those times were against Johannson and Liston, levels of punchers Dempsey never faced. Patterson for much of his career was rarely hit clean, watch his fights.

Why couldn't Dempsey KO the 175lb Gibbons, Prime Miske, Tunney? He hasn't come near to ko'ing anyone on the level of Patterson. Tunney aside he hasn't fought anyone on Patterson's level. If he couldn't get throught their defenses, would he get through Pattersons? It's possible granted but to assume he would takes a great deal of blind faith based on his actual achievements. There's also the possibility Patterson completely outspeeds and outboxes Dempsey ala Tunney

How about we pick a prime Dempsey against Patterson, instead of the past it, inactive man who faced Tunney?

Floyd was down 19 times, so I was one out ,[nearer than your 17].

We don't know how far Dempsey was from prime against Tunney, we do know it was by far the best opponent he ever faced and he spent his prime avoiding any skilled operators bar the undersized Gibbons, who with all due respect to him isn't nearly as good as a Patterson.

Patterson has only been counted out once. Out of Patterson's KDs, 7 were in his stoppage loss to Johansson, 4 against Liston, 1 as a 19yo, 4 past of the age of 30. Frazier was down over 10 times facing far less top contenders than Patterson

PP, I agree with you that Patterson's chin gets underated, I agree with you that he fought better punchers than Dempsey and I agree with you that Patterson would be the best Dempsey faced, but I still like Dempsey big here.

Patterson does have an air of vulnerability, and Dempsey was pretty brutal and punched very hard.

None of this ko1 stuff for me, but I like Demspey to close the blinds on Floyd.
