Liston had the meanest Gansta look and built but in reality, he froze Patterson 2 times like a deer caught in the headlights then hit and he had an impressive Ko's over Clevelend "BIG CAT Williams ( who was already KO'd in3 by 174lb Bob Satterfield (Big Cat was overated) and Liston was dropped and had his Jaw broken by 170lb Marty Marshall, so dispite the great look and well built body, Liston finished by KO"D badly by Leotis Martin and had a bit of the Tysonlike, I quit when you dont attitude, Dempsey had balls and was really mean, Liston would be a worthy foe but dont sell Jack short, I wouldn't bet against him, he was a fast hard 2 fisted guy and had KIller instinct...fight might get down to who really wanted it more
Floyd patterson was a weak Champion?????? WWWTTTFFFFFFF are you talking about?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! Besides, did you see how Liston totally anialated him? As fo Liston losing the title right away, the belt was taken from him by a man who later become the concencus greatest fighter of all time.[/QUOTE] Patterson was a weak champ, he was never highly regarded as a fighter. As a person, yes, as a fighter, no. He ducked top competition whille champ--or actually his manager, D'Amato did. He lost to a guy he should have not lost to (Johanson) Liston did not clean out th edivision, he did beat some good heavies of his time, but in NO WAY cleaned out division. He sucked as champ.
I believe Valdes had fallen out of the top 10 by the time he fought Liston so that is not a big win. Additionally, I didn't think Summerlin was rated that highly when he fought Liston.
Patterson was the youngest champion in history, the first to regain the heavyweight title, a gold medalist, and had many wins over ranked contenders. Dempsey set no such records. The debuting Rademacher? Am I to understand that you're making criticisms here about champions fighting men with no pro fights? Well, then I'm certainly glad that you've given me the edge in this debate. Dempsey fought approximately 25 men in his career who had no previously recorded pro fights. Patterson fought Rademacher who at least had the legacy of a gold medal. What did those other guys that Dempsey fought have? Guys like London, Jackson, and Mcneely at least had good records, and oh....Patterson actually gave them title shots!! Why don't you ask Dempsey who he gave a title shot to between 1923-1926?
Sounds like you need to do some research on Patterson. He was one hell of a great fighter. He didn't clean out the division? Okay, then why don't you give me a list of guys whom you felt he ducked. If there were any, then hopfully they still had their teeth, because nobody else did.
Dempsey did not fight all the top contenders around but no heavyweight champion fought all the contenders of their era.
Why would Jeanette be calling out a young, green contender? Is there a link for an article discussing this, I'd like to read it.
The article also stated that Dempsey looked calm and not the least disturbed but his management got angry and refused to let this fight take place- under any circumstances. You dont fight an opponent like Jeannette on no notice.
What sensible manager would alow his fighter who had trained to fight a non entity take a fight with a much more dangerous fighter at 30 seconds notiice? It would be like if Wlad Klitschko had trained to fight some journeyman and was presented instead with Andrew Golotta on the day. His refusal to take the fight on these terms would not imply that he was afraid of the 40 year old Golotta. The silly think is that if Dempsey had anihilated the bus pass versions of Langford and Jeanette many of the same people who are criticising him for not fighting them would criticise him for beating up on old men. It is beyond silly really.
Sorry, didn't look into this thread until just now. It was in New York, on November 16, 1918, at the charity show. Jeannette was 39 years old by that time, Dempsey - 23. New York Times article
