Sonny Liston vs Jack Sharkey (fixed)

Dempsey fought an actual Chaplin-esque opponent. Chaplin himself, in fact. All things equal, both mixing it in gloriously notorious Bad Framerate with Charlie literally kicking Jack’s ass.

No one talks much about the time The Mauler lost to The Tramp but unlike the murky first fight v Flynn, this one is on film for the whole world to see and know the truth.

Or, by the ninth round, both fighters are so confused that the 9th looks like the 15th round of Rocky 2, or any round of Baer and Carnera, only neither guy gets back up, both thinking they're supposed to stay down.

 

Well, rumour has it (perfect disclaimer) that Liston, so impressed by Sharks’ face first flop v Carnera, asked for lessons from the man himself on how to lay down convincingly in Maine.

With all good intentions and enthusiasm, Sharks began the tutoring but gave up after just a few days, lamenting that Sonny was the worst student ever and couldn’t take the most simple instructions.

In sheer frustration, after what ended up being their last lesson together, Sharks barked at Sonny, saying “Fine, do it YOUR way!”

And so Sonny did and the rest is history.

 

Yes! There were far better schooled fish flipping around in the old timers, purpose built, oversized dive tank. I believe they would even “buddy” up, choreograph and practice their respective moves in fabulously stunning synchronisation.

Btw, to allay any misunderstanding, Sonny’s original impressions of Jack’s proficiencies in the lost art of diving weren’t gleaned from Bad Framerate Sharkey. No, not at all. 14 yo Sonny was actually there, saw Jack and Primo live, in the flesh. Even better than 8K 120 fps or whatever else they’ve come up with.

 

Sharkey was a diver in the Navy...

 

Sharkey sees a vision of Ernie Schaaf and, after sampling an uppercut in which it was Liston's forearm that actually made contact with his chin,Sharkey theatrically swoons to the floor to be counted out.Double crossing the double crossers.

 

Old Jack sure could swoon..

Someone gives Sonny Liston what looks like oxygen, but it is really a whiff of Chloroform, Liston staggers from a clinch and rolls over in the 1st round, snoring, rattling the papers from all of the typewriters. Soon the writers think that a twister has hit in the inside of the auditorium. Ha Ha.
