Could Jefferies beat this more modern fighter. They were approximately the same size.

Great matchup! If a 25 rd fight then Jeffries by KO late. If 15 rds LISTON by dec. Jeffries was Listons predicessor but tougher if possible.

Actually 1 of the 3 fav matchups I'd make if allowed 3 matchups. Brutal fight. Maybe the most brutal ever.

I really can't think of a better matchup than these two with 5 ounce gloves oldtime rules and no pansy refs and this being a finish fight. Now THAT would be worth $100. 00 . Not the crap this coming weekend. Great matchup Memory!!!!!!!!

Jeffries could potentially win, if we make certain "fill in the blanks" assumptions about him.

While we have a very clear idea what Sonny Liston was, we have to use a bit of guesswork when interpreting what Jim Jeffries was.

Whether or not he could beat Liston, would depend what assumptions you made on certain variables, i.e how does his hand speed, chin, power, and physical strength compare to Liston's, and what exactly was his style?

Liston via late KO, though my experience of Jeffries starts at the fight with Johnson, which is considered past his prime, and ends with a story I heard about him vs Fitzsimmons

ChristAlmighty... Liston by KO in 3 or 4. A slaughter. Jeffries took beatings from featherfisted dandies and wharfbrawlers. Liston would eat him alive.

Jack Dempsey said, “His record shows that he went up against all manner of men from the scientific boxers to the heavy sluggers, and nobody ever came within a mile and a half of beating the real Jeffries.”

Totally agree. And even if the Jeffries jaw holds up, his skin would be ripped to shreds by the Liston jab.

Which isn't even accurate at all. Fitz and Corbett both gave Jeffries hell. And some guy named Johnson gave him a long sustained beating.
