The Walcott of the first Louis fight, against the Liston of the first Williams fight. 15 rounds, who do you think wins? Although Liston isn't the one-dimensional brawler some people make him out to be, Walcott was probably the better boxer. Liston has a clear edge in punching power, but Walcott's speed and slickness give him an edge in mobility. Both had decent chins, but Liston was probably more durable. Liston also had underrated defense and might have an edge there as well. Walcott had more heart, although prior to the Ali losses, Liston did KO Williams after suffering a broken nose, and finished a fight against Marty Marshall with a broken jaw, so early in his career, I'd say that he had pretty good heart. Also, the question of whether or not Walcott would be intimidated by Liston should be considered. Walcott has a better resume and better stamina. I think that the most likely scenarios are a Walcott decision or a Liston KO. If Walcott can avoid Liston's power punches and outbox Liston, he has a good chance of winning. If Liston intimidates Walcott, and catches him with the type of punch that knocked out Patterson, I don't see Joe getting up.
walcott was a much better fighter, simply i don´t think that he had the durability enough to take the damage from liston, of course walcott would make liston look stupid before of liston lands clean on his chin
I think Walcott could at least do what Eddie Machen did to survive. Walcott was a good spoiler for much of his career but his mettle came out in the end proving what a two handed tiger he could be when he needed it. Joe knew how to set up a knockout punch. He one-timed a Prime Charles and Harold Johnson. However Liston really committed to his long range game using full weight and momentum so it's harder for Walcott to draw Sonny in because he's already coming at you. It's not like he was standing off waiting to pounce. Sonny was like a train coming at you all the time. Burt Whitehurst fired with Sonny who found him pesky and frustrating in two fights. Burt was not in Walcotts class but he found a way to survive against Liston working inside and tying Sonny up. He felt he had Sonnys number and claimed (in Bob mees book "liston and Ali") that "outside Liston was hell, but up close it was calm and I was safe". If Walcott worked that out he could cause an upset.
I am not sure if I have ever seen these two matched up or commented on them in a bout. First let me say that Walcott's footwork and countering skills are not going to be much help to him in this fight. Sonny is a patient boxer when needed and will be just as happy to jab and jab until he finds an opening. What Walcott will need to do is use his lateral movement and mix it up with bull rushes and hope he gets lucky with a hard hook or quick combination. I do not think he can deal with the jab of Liston. Liston will stick it in his face and make him deal with it. Once Walcott tries to move in Liston will be waiting, slipping and ducking and firing. I see a war because Walcott will have no choice. Machen was in survival mode and Liston did not press the fight unnessarily. This is another thing I love about Sonny. He takes what you give. He presses or hangs back and boxes. As long as he is winning he never seemed to mind. But if it comes to shootout I gotta go with Sonny. Walcott has to power to get Sonny's respect but that will only prolong the match where I see Liston winning a clear decison. Nice bout.
Walcott was a much better fighter, Liston had the power but JJW stood up to many punchers and only lost to the best who had other skills besides punching.....I like JJW to confuse and frustrate Sonny and possibly drop SL on picking up a UD
I think Liston's ATG left jab and lengthy wingspan would negate some of Walcott's slickness and boxing tactics. And Sonny's power and aggression would only ad to the problem.. Liston by early to mid round KO.
Walcott was dropped by Charles ,not a big puncher. Liston would embalm him. Whitehurst finished their second fight outside the ring trying to get back in after being belted by Sonny, the last bell saved him from a KO. Bob Mee needs to do more research before he send his final manuscript in.
As much as I both like and respect Joe Walcott, I'm rather surprised that he's getting the benefit of the doubt by a lot of people here.
Walcott would have a chance. Consider the Marshall victory and Machen easily going the distance, and then it's not hard to envision Jersey Joe wining by decision.
