Who wins? The only ATG that would be in the ring. I mean, yeah, I know Liston is 8'5 and goes 590 pounds in fantasy fights but in real life he's not that big. Not enough to offset the massive difference in quality between the two, that's for sure. "B-B-B-But Sonny's Bone density, Boxed!" :blood
louis by ko. as someone else said here liston is a poor mans louis. if they fought 10 times louis takes seven, the other three liston might plant one of those hooks on louis' chin [if it wasnt for louis' suspect chin- nobody ever would have much of a chance] imo
This would be a very dangerous fight for Louis, but I think his speed would be the deciding factor. He would beat Liston to the punch more often than not, and that would permit him to implement his fight plan.
Joe Louis cherry picked his opponents and no matter how overrated Liston is ( He beat a super middleweight with a glass chin in Floyd Patterson and the highly overrated and unskilled Cleveland Williams) he would still knock out Louis. Louis is one of these guys the media tells you he is great because he is a old time boxer and dumb dumbs who don't know boxing will believe it. You will believe sing Max Baer couldn't knock him out then it must of ment he could take a punch. Then you realize Max Baer never beat a black fighter in his career. He was extremely unskilled, His punching power was built up by the inferior opponents he faced. Even though Louis Louis was small compared to mordern heavyweights or he wasn't really a modern size heavweight period. He wasn't quick on his feet. He was slow physically weak boxer who couldn't take a punch. His punching power was good enough to beat for the most part 180 pound white cruiserweight boxers of his era but his chin got him dropped all the time. With Joe Louis glass chin I can't even see him beating guys like Wladimir Klitchko who has a glass chin but he people who knocked im down were way bigger than the peopple who dropped Louis. Liston by knock out in 3 rounds tops.
i would say equal foot speed. At first Joe Louis looks primitive, then when you learn and watch more, you come to the realization that he had great balance and intelligence, a brilliant ring general who understood ring strategy. Yes Louis could be dropped by a non elite puncher but almost always got up and KOed said person. I see a battle of the jabs and Liston swelling up Louis pretty bad even knocking him down a few times. Ninth round Liston wobbles Louis with a jab, moves in for the kill but gets countered by a right, then left hook. Louis KO 9. 50/50 fight imo.
I see a bit of a slug fest. I can edge towards the better boxer in Louis. But Liston cant be underestimated, if they had fought Sonny wouldve probably been the most dangerous fighter Joe fought. :deal
BTW- Liston and Louis were best friends from the mid-fifties until Liston's death. They lived in Las Vegas about a mile from each other when Liston died. I never heard if Liston opined on who could beat the other one. Louis was asked how he would have fought Liston. He replied "With a gun".
