Tyson is too fast in this one. Liston had a strong jab, yes, but it doesn't find the mark on a prime Iron Mike.
Many people feel that is the main debate around it.McGrain makes a good case the jab would land.:think
Yes, he does, but Tyson's bob and weave avoids that jab. The point has been made earlier that Liston's jab wasn't quick enough to land on Tyson, and it's a point I concur with. Tyson bobs it and comes in hard with his own combinations. I have a hard time seeing Liston control Tyson with a jab.
True but Liston would be one of the few that could beat Tyson in his prime.I kinda go around on it for weeks now if the jab would land or not.Sadly we will never find out.Would have been an epic war.
You either stole my post.... ....or saved me some typing. Liston wins this one during the staredown. Mcgrain's earlier post has much in that's plausible. I think Mike lasts longer than Floyd, but not by much.
So Mike's chin and heart(not that Floyd didn't have) would keep him longer?Like it has been said unlike other fighters Tyson had heart only to last but change the tide(Holy I,Lewis,Douglas).
I am very suprised that no one has mentioned Patterson as a case for Liston winning. Tyson had the same style has Patterson but was a more skilled fighter and a natural Heavyweight. However, Tyson's style plays right into Liston's hands. Meaning while Tyson's coming in, he will be met with a well timed jab and right hand. Let's not forget that Liston had some nice uppercuts of his own in his arsenal that he could use at mid range. To make a long post short, Liston wins by mid to late rounds TKO/KO.
I don't see Patterson's shortcomings being much of a correlate to how Tyson would do. Patterson also seemed to have a fear of Liston, given the stories of him bringing a costume to escape the arena after his predicted loss, etc.. I don't believe Tyson would be afraid of Liston, and his frailties only came into play once he'd lost his management, left his prime, and become a headhunter.
Corrected for truth. Okay, Williams wasn't a cruiserweight, but he did land a quite a good amount of hard shots on him... Cleveland's only problem was that he could dish it out, but couldn't take it. Tyson could. He's much faster and technically better than Williams and would be all over Liston. I also think that Liston's jab, which was very slow, would not land frequently on Tyson at all. Just because he beat a glass chinned, cruiserweight version of Tyson with much smaller power doesn't mean he beats Tyson.
Sonny Liston and George Foreman were Mike Tyson's biggest nightmares. Cus D'Amato said it many times that a short slugger with a swarming style could never beat these two long armed punchers. Both Liston and Foreman could knock a man down with a jab. If you are coming straight at them, they can't miss. Unlike the Klitschkos who nearly always pull straight back, Liston and Foreman would usually stand their ground and let their fists go. What happened to Joe Frazier would happen to Tyson, although it might take a bit longer.
