Sonny Liston vs Ridddick Bowe

Sonny at his best would beat the Bowe of the two Golota fights for sure and I have Sonny ahead of Riddick in any heavyweight rankings.

Riddick on his best night might be slight favorite h2h, he's a good bigger man, but it's still a dangerous fight. Sonny had a very good jab and hit hard. You can almost feel the power when you watch him land in fights. He hit harder than Holyfield imo and took a good punch. Bowe always looked fairly easy to hit and tended to get caught up in brawls. Bowe was durable so if he wins, it's another war where he takes a lot of punishment.

 

Bowe was not in that many wars. Five between Holyfield and Golota.

 

That's quite a lot of punishment in those five fights vs Holyfield and Golota. The Holyfield trilogy were his biggest bouts. He went from looking good in 1995 to being finished by the end of '96 at the age of 29.. Bowe lacked discipline and lacked defense.
If he fights Sonny, he gets another war imo and more punishment even if he might win.

 

Totally agreed. Generally when I think of guys who were in a lot of wars, I think of Gene Fullmer and Carmen Basilio. I don't know if you've ever watched them, but every fight is literally a war; it's unbelievable. Bowe was in several here, but not as many as I would say are a lot, but you're right he was in five brutal wars, all that deserve to be called some of the most exciting heavyweight fights, not just of the 90s, but of all time.

 

Well, Herbie Hide was both undefeated and Champ. Rodriguez was both an excellent amateur and undefeated, certainly a solid contender.

But you do have validity to your argument, Bowe's resume is pretty shaky. He had more than a few fights that were kind of like Holy-leftovers.

But he was still a fine fighter and, on the night of Holy I, more than capable of giving an ATG performance. He had Championship-calibre heart.

 

Its not a matter of opinion that Liston never beat a guy like Bowe form the outside. Its a matter of fact. Hilarious that 4 insecure losers like that post.

 

You can burn through your prime by having though battles in poor condition. Thats what happened to Bowe. It doesn't take a career of punishment to blow away a prime either. One night can change a fighters career.

Bowe's immaturity and lack of discipline let him down. When boxing is 95% mental , it meant Bowe wasn't going to last long , but he was the full package during his short time and would be hard to beat for anybody in history.

 

WITH THE REQUISITE DEDICATION HE COULD HAVE BEEN TOP TEN ALL TIME,IMO.

 

Its my opinion Liston beats Bowe, you are entitled to think otherwise.Everyone who disagrees with you isn't insecure or a loser.,and those 4 certainly aren't.

Yeah I put him on ignore. He starts lashing out when he's on the losing end of an argument as is the case with yourself and I. I don't give a flying **** what he thinks of me (though I might be a little insecure as I was recently told by a "well-respected" member I'm one of the main reasons for this forum's decline )

You make make a big song and dance about Sonnys reach being a key factor to his success , but in another thread you pick Joe Louis over Sonny Liston.. Joe Louis had a 76 inch reach. NINE inches shorter than Listons..

You pick Louis with slow feet , t- rex arms and questionable durability to overcome Liston.. Yet a guy like Bowe who matches up better than Louis is outmatched in every department according to you???

You picked based on who you wanted to win , and when your biases were challenged , you cried and attacked like a little baby.
