If you make any argument based mainly upon simple facts of size, you better get them right if you want to have creddibility. While you only slightly rounded up the difference in height, you are way, WAY off in the difference in weight. Bowe in his peak fight here was 235 lbs. You think Liston weighed something under 195 in the Williams (or any) pro fight? You are not even close. In fact for their height Liston seemingly had more muscle mass-not to mention more power. I have no problem with an argument made for Bowe-though I believe Liston also had enough skill to be the favorite... But if you are going almost entirely by size you cannot either exaggerate to an absurd degree, or get it so wrong. BTW Bowe was durable, but he only had 3 fights against mediocre opponents after 28.
Liston fought at 210-220 range. When prime Bowe weighed over 260 lbs? Maybe Bowe would have been stopped had he fought any solid puncher.
Bowe threw the belt in the trash...Sonny QUIT on his stool in '64...and took a dive in Maine in '65....toss up!!!
Style wise bad matchup for sonny? Lmao Bowe's defense was taking shots with his face, despite the "size difference", Liston was the stronger guy and had much more power and strength, he would kick the ass of Bowe all Night long, Liston would be happy of having a big target with no defence
Prime Liston 212 and prime Bowe 230-235. But bowe was flabby,he never was a physical specimen or specially strong for his size. Liston was the stronger man here no question about
I don´t know if you watch something else then your 30s arousals, but maybe have you seen Riddick fight a fellow named Evander Holyfield 3 times? Beat him two times very convincingly, while one loss was arguably a draw? May I proceed? Cooper stopped in 2. Seldon stopped in 1. Tillery stopped in 4. Nelson stopped in 1. Dokes stopped in 1. Ferguson (who beat Mercer) stopped in 2. Hide on the run stopped in 6. Unbeaten SHW Gonzales mauled in 6. He could box. He was durable. He had teriffic balance for his height. He had reach and could jab. He could punch extremely solid on the inside, but also with power on the outside. In that time frame, he was ATG material. Thats why I´m picking him over a boxer who half his resume is about stopping a total glass jawed pumped up LHW x2. Because the H2H qualities of Liston are a benefit of the doubt that he couldn´t show on film. Bowe showed, Liston didn´t. I choose Bowe to win.
Liston was the same size as Holyfield only w a longer reach, better jab, better stamina, and more power.
I keep seeing THAT uppercut Bowe hit Holyfield with in the 10th round of their first fight, the one that pretty much insured Holy would lose. Not sure how Liston would react to that kind of shot...I can't recall Williams (though an excellent puncher) landing flush with that powerful a punch. I could be wrong.
Upvoted for the good argument, not necessarily because I think it's right. I think Bowe's technical skills progressively degraded later in his career in favour of imposing his physicality, and imho that's usually a bad sign in a fighter. That said, I will go so far as to say that Bowe could be competitive in this fight, it's not like he was some bum or something.
