I have to agree with the person who started the thread. I think this is a really bad match-up for Rocky
I disagree, Rocky had underrated defence, that crouching defence is effective. Rocky was powerful and tough with heart. If Rocky could survive the early storm which he always seemed to do then he had the heart to stop Liston somewhere over 15. If not then Liston by late ko, but I see Rocky winning it.
I have thought this one over many times, going back and forth. My last conclusion was that Rocky would get past that jab and have a good chance at breaking him down. It was possible to discourage Liston and power has a wonderful way of discouraging opposing fighters. As noted many times, Rocky applied his power all over the body so it's not like he has to wait for or work for perfect openings. Either way, I think this fight is a LOT closer than many are calling it. And if Liston were to win, Marciano would be far and away the best scalp on his entire resume.
I understand why you made this post, but I don't agree with it. Liston wasn't a fast destroyer inspite of his decimation of Patterson. He was very capable of fighting at a consistent pace and proved this ability over and again, most notably against Machen and Clark. He retained his power for this reason so Marciano wouldn't just be dealing with an early storm - Liston would be a persistent danger, and the hammer could fall at any time. His style advantage here isn't limited to traditional puncher versus swarmer, he has excellence at all ranges and excelled at making space for his punches. In addition, he is going to be having at least moderate success with the heaviest jab seen in the division until peak Lewis, and perhaps ever. If you are bringing pressure against such a fighter, it better be exceptionally fast, a la Armstrong. You must keep your opponent smothered. Smothering a fighter with Liston's attributes is very hard even if you close the distance, but Marciano is not Frazier in this regard. I think the pressure is to slow.
You did not give an opinion. You talk a lot, because you like the sound of your own voice ,but you don't say much ,or at least nothing that's worth listening to.
