50-50 for a KO but Holy's chin was ridiculous. Liston might have to settle for a decision. Liston had a much better defense, and countering ability than Bowe though. When Holy misses, Liston will make him pay. He also didn't have a tendency to loop the right like Bowe.

I'd bet on Sonny Liston's Pre Championship. Although @Fergy did not point out exactly which year it is, we understand that it is a better Liston release than when he became champion.

 

Dont know if the peak Sonny could have kod Holyfield of 1992.However this is a
fight I would pay a helluva lot of money to see ! It would have been a classic.

 

I think a fight with Holyfield would look a lot like Liston's fight with Cleveland Williams. Big time exchanges , while Holy is probably a better boxer than Cleveland , Holyfield doesn't have the power Cleveland had . Williams landed some major league bombs on Sonny and he walked through them and ko'ed the Big Cat. He'd do the same to Evander

 

And you would be right with your money,Fergy. Sonny stops Evander around the fifth round after a fairly competitive contest. Once Liston starts getting his big shots on target a courageous Holyfield has had it.

 

It’s possible but I think Sonny would be better off using his elite jab and long reach to do most of the work. If this turns into a slugfest and a battle of wills then I’m inclined to picking Evander

 

Really? It's the other way around for me. I think Holy would do well to stay out of a slugfest by any means necessary. He's not winning that one imo. That's exactly what cost him against Bowe imo.

 

Correct. Liston is only capable of knocking out anyone up to the level of Bethea. He wouldn't stand a chance (or at the very least would have to settle for a decision) against the likes of Cleveland Williams, Floyd Patterson, etc. Oh wait.
