Perfect statement for Charles Sonny Liston. I just watched the Sonny Liston - The Champ Nobody Wanted. It's pretty good, slightly biased in favor like most documentaries (The part with Ali yelling at Sonny because he knew he didn't really hit him was a stretch). I know probably not thread worthy. I'm in a Liston mood, though.
Indeed, well not in the criminal and player kind of sense. But pure within himself. Liston loved children and old people the most. He knew he wouldn't be judged and wasn't vulnerable to them. He could just be himself and be liked around them. But man he was hated badly at the time. He got a big "boo" roar in the Liston vs Patterson I fight.
The medias treatment of Liston was disgusting. He was very quiet with people he didn't know and people mistook his silence as arrogance.
And anger-meanness. But as his wife said that was his personality (To be quiet). The truth is Liston just didn't have good people skills. And he had a nasty snarl. But the people around him described him as lovable.
Is that documentary online anywhere? I'd love to see it. I remember there was a movie in production called Phantom Punch but I don't think it's been released yet.

I always read biographies, in the last 2 months i've read books on Marlon Brando, Frank Sinatra, Charles Manson and Ted Bundy .... I want a book on Liston ..
sonny also one of the most underated champs. (alltough not here on this forum) not just a powerhouse but a very good technical fighter. and if there was a who beats who tournament he would end up at least in the top 5
The bio of Liston written by Nick Toscches..a biographer of Dean Martin, among others...it's a good read, though not a "straight bio", as the writer takes off on some artistic tangents, let us say...though again, it's a good bio of Liston.
Thanks, I actually haven't read a biography on the man. Red Cobra recommends one, I want to get reading on him too so I'll probably stick with his recommendation. Brando must have been quite an interesting biography to read. Frank Sinatra happens to my cousin, too. Scorsese's making a movie on him I believe. As for the posters who know tons on Liston. I bet McGrain and SuzieQ could really help you out with a book recommendation too. Thanks for that pic upload. I've heard of that too. The Phantom Punch is a movie made on Liston starring Ving Rhames. I was interested in seeing it but it didn't really get a wide release or much attention. I actually found the documentary online at a boxing site I found. It's not a streaming link - I'll PM you.
