    I stand corected.

You might sympathise with my argument that Williams is a bit of an enigma, and hard to place as a contender.

I love how in frank's reality, you can use the names Greb and Robinson sarcastically when talking about the greatest.

And that Chris Byrd is the epitome of slickness

But he TWICE lost to a man whom Liston kayoed in 1 round 2 fights in a row? Hardly a big miss. Not to mention Johansson wouldn't have got in the ring with a Prime Liston even if you had given him a baseball bat

Lets not overlook the fact that Johansen also beat Patterson once, and that he beat Machen much more convincingly than Liston did.

I think that if we are going to haul Dempsey over the coals for every key contender of the era that he never crossed paths with, then we have to note this as a key fight that didn't happen.

It also wasn't for a lack of willing on Johansens part. It is just one of those fights that didn't happen.

    Johansson record against Patterson/Machen is 2-2...that's 500.

    Liston's record against Patterson/Machen is 3-0...

How is this even up for debate?

Johansson never fought Cleveland Williams or Zora Folley, two outstanding fighters of the era. He also didn't take on the dangerous slugger, Nino Valdes, who was single handedly wiping out the Europe Crew.

    2 reasons:

Johansson wanted no part of Sonny Liston. The last time Johansson was in the ring with a big dangerous slugger, he ran away to momma before they DQed him.

Johansson TWICE lost by knockout to Floyd Patterson....a man whom Liston destroyed 2x in 1 round. Enough said.

Except Wills/Greb were two overwhelming fighters of the era...they were beating all of the men who dempsey fought instead!!!

In Listons case, he was dominating a man who twice whipped Johannson

What evidence do you have that Johansen wanted no part of Liston.

The evidence I have seen suggests that the fight was almost signed.

a clear win is a clear win. liston didn't knock him out now and ingo's demoltion was more impressive sure, but it doesn't count too much against liston.

the strongest argument in my opinion is that liston cleaned out a decent era of heavyweights. dempsey did not.

i don't count ingo as a missed opportunity at all. i do count greb and willis highly against dempsey. and fulton's claim to fame was dominating a fat old BLIND langford. from what i've read he won from his jab, his size and langford's own form at the time, not anything specatular he brought to the table. if this is among dempsey's biggest wins, than the argument for liston strengthen's imo

Close? Liston won 9-10 rounds on any normal scorecard. I call that a WIDE clear cut decision. Machen also engaged Johansson, while he ran like a deer in headlights from Liston.

level peging with Patterson despite going 1-2 against him, twice being knocked out?

He still got the clear W. Liston doesn't have one man on his resume whom he lost too in which johansson beat. Johansson has two losses by KO on his resume to a man who couldn't last one round with Sonny Liston.
