I commonly see Sonny Liston placed in the top 10 heavyweights of other people who love boxing just like I do. I do not understand why though, I don't think he was as exceptional as others do. I knew he blew Floyd Patterson out twice, lost twice to Muhammad Ali, and beat some good but not great contenders. I would appreciate it if some posters would tell me why does he have such solid rankings in top 10s? Head to head ability? His mystique? His aura? I don't see it. I respect him for what he has done, I don't have him in my top 10 though.
Sonny Liston is the most hysterically over rated fighter on this forum, even more over rated than Marciano. Liston folded tent twice aka quit, against the only modern, big , skilled heavyweight he met in the Ring, he never had the mental make up to go out on his shield. Undeniable fact.
Don't you dare disrespect the Father Of Boxing by calling him by that name. His name is Muhammad Ali. Respect Ali or quit being a boxing fan because you're a disgrace. I don't understand how you can be on Liston's side when he cheated in the first fight. The only fraud was Liston himself. He made you clueless people think the fight was fixed by staying on the canvas for more seconds instead of getting up. You just don't understand Ali's greatness. Plain and simple.
I don't count Liston's losses to Ali because he was up against the greatest boxer of all time. The real question you need to ask yourself is does Liston deserve his place amongst the greatest heavyweights? I say that because he cheated in some fights and that tarnished his boxing career. He cheated against Ali, Zora Folley, etc. He may not be a hundred percent to blame because of working for the boxing mafia and they probably told him to cheat.
This is a much better summation of my basic point of view than I could write myself, so I just second this.
