Sonny Liston walked through Floyd Patterson but he didn't walk through Eddie Machen - or even Bert Whitehurst.
It's hard to say whether he'd crush Fitzsimmons or Corbett or Sharkey or whether they'd give him serious problems or beat him.

Fitz has no more than a puncher's chance against Liston, that's a nightmare opponent for him given his style up at heavy. I guess Fitz's best chance would be if Sonny got stoopid about the "little white guy" in front of him and decided to step in where it was not necessary.

We are of course talking about the 2 years retired ,39years old Fitz, not the dynamo that kod Corbett.

We are assessing the Liston that had just taken the title off of Patterson here, not the 4 years earlier version who had just 17 fights under his belt.

Likewise these are the aging, faded , coming out of extended retirement, versions of Fitz and Corbett.
Whitehurst was a survivor he saw the last bell against punchers like DeJohn,Foster, and Satterfield. Only Moore stopped him, Liston knocked him out of the ring in their 2nd encounter, but the bell saved old Bert.

How many rounds did Bert win in their 2nd fight? Scorecards=37-50,40-50,39-48 That's about how many Corbett would manage, should he be standing at the end.

Can you see a 39 years old, two years retired boxer, who is 40lbs lighter beating a prime Sonny Liston?

Dont forget, being an older fighter, coming out of retirement and expected to last less than a round, if he lands a punch, it will be cheered to the hills and for this reason, expect him to get the points in any round he lands a half decent punch or two and makes Sonny miss. (i know in modern terms we tend to assume the judges are halfway bias anyway, but in reality, if the judges are on the level, expect a natural bias to give Corbett the win, if he lasts the distance).

I agree that it is most likely that Sonny wins this by knockout, but it is not a foregone conclusion.
