Despite the popularity,,,,,,,, In terms of being 'with it' Sonny Liston was really the first 'rock-n-roll' champion. The man was really into 'up-beat' Jazz. Loved "The Shadows' and Gene Vincent on the rock-n-roll circuit. His nickname was T.C. for 'Top Cat'. And with the younger kids, he was one 'Cool Cat Daddy-O' Of course his rope-skipping sessions to 'Night Train are legendary. Cassius on the other hand, was pretty much a 'square'. Not too much up on Pop Music, somewhat of a 'Nerd'. Suprisingly, arriving at the same time as The Beatles, he was not 'in tune man'.
I dunno man. He hung with my favorite singer Sam Cooke. That's about as cool as it gets. :smoke But Sonny listened to jazz, loved the great "blue" comics like Redd Foxx and Pigmeat Markham. I think a pre-fame Sonny could have hung with the hip cats in Harlem or any other black cultural center moreso than a pre-fame Cassius Clay. No doubt....
Surf-Bat,,,, Yes, I did forget 'The Greatest' did hang a bit with Mr. Cooke. Sonny liked to play Gene Vincent songs on the juke box up at The Pines, in the Summer of 1962, and nobody else knew who James Brown was, except for Sonny. The only Jim Brown I knew back then, ran over Linebackers.......... Of course he loved 'Night Train', versions by Jimmy Forrest and than later James Brown. But the man was super cool, as he was a big fan of 'Booker T and the MG's'.
Surf-didnt know Sonny Liston loved my favorite TV comic, the great Redd Foxx. I watch today, Redd Foxx reruns of Sanford and Son, and to me they never fail to break me up,after all these years. There will never be another Redd Foxx, for his comedy is never dated...Bravo for Sonny !
Actually, I read that Sonny did a pretty spot-on impression of both Foxx and Markham. Sammy Davis jr owed no small debt to Markham(at least for one gag): [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DvMBxlu62c0[/ame]
I like the coolness of Sonny Liston. What's the quote from him, "someday they'll make a blues song for prizefighters ....... " ? Obviously Cassius Clay was just a young 'nerdy athlete type. Those types do tend to make the best athletes generally. He wasn't even a *****-hound in those early years. He made up for that in his later years.
The young Cassius Clay was very MUCH in tune with music. He was a fan of Lloyd Price,Little Richard and Sam Cooke. He even recorded a version of Ben E. King's Stand By Me.
"Some day they're gonna write a Blues for fighters. It'll just be for Slow guitar, soft trumpet and a bell" Sonny Liston C'mon, he's gotta be one of the coolest cats to ever be champion of the world. Very underappreciated in his own time. If he came along 10 years later he would've been a super star beyond boxing.
Redd Foxx was greatest...I watch the rereuns of Sanford too...I never missed them back in the 70's...my Dad and me used to laugh ourselves sick almost...you're right B.B.,...his comedy dosen't get dated..
