Only if you think 2pac was cool, and he wasn't. Tupac Shakur was a bit gay, wannabe gangster. Tyson was cooler back in '88 when he was fighting Mitch Green at 3A.M. In the morning outside "Dapper Dans" up in Harlem, where he'd apparently gone to pick up a jacket with "Don't Believe The Hype" on it.
Redd Foxx was a comic genius. The show was the funniest on American tv by far. Yes it was derived from Steptoe and Son.
Yes, Sonny was good friends with Redd Foxx, Nipsey Russell and Godfrey Cambridge. And Ed Sullivan was his pal too. Another favorite,,,,,,,,,Bukka White's 'Shake Em On Down' Sonny was into those blues, just as the British boys were picking up on it, and speeding the songs up. And it was Sonny, who was asked to guest on Ed Sullivan's Show with The Beatles, not the square Mr. Clay, who didn't even know who they were.
December 7, 1963. Cassius Clay helps get Sam Cooke booked on The Jerry Lewis Show. Cassius said he would only appear on the two-hour variety show, if Sam Cooke was booked with him as a package deal. Cassius used his current popularity, as a bargaining chip, to help Sam get a 'gig' on the Television Show. Sam Cooke usually gets an $1100 minimum per appearance.
turp, Sonny also used to hit the speed bag to Eddie Cochran's 'C'mon Everybody' and The Shadows 'Move It',,,,,,,, Sipping Cutty Sark, and listening to Gene Vincent and the Blue Caps,,'Be-Bop-A-Lula'
Heavy blues, American jazz,,,,,,,,,,and he played the saxophone too. Hit all the Stockholm and Gottenburg night clubs with INGO back in 1966 and 1967. But he was up on the current music trends,
Foxx, the funniest man who ever wore suspenders! After an unknown Larry Holmes TKO'd Foxx's boy, Young Sanford, Foxx came over and saw Larry with his mother, who was weeping. "Why you cryin'?" he asked. "'Cause I'm so happy." "Then what do you do when you're sad?" * * * Foxx as the unforgettable Fred Sanford (paraphrased): OBNOXIOUS AUNT ESTHER: "I was blessed beautiful from birth by Mother Nature!" MR. SANFORD: "And when you got old you got cursed by Father Time!"
My dad called me to the tv that night on Ed Sullivan when Liston skipped rope..I was like..hypnotized watching him. Even skipping rope, Liston had that air of menace about him that fascinated me as a boy.
:rofl:rofl...another one was...(Redd): "Esther...you're so ugly..I could push your face in dough and make gorilla cookies"....Redd Foxx was the greatest!
He liked the blues too..he once said that in a filmed tribute to him the music would be a guitar with some sad blues played on the trumpet. I like the theme of this thread...Liston was a cool guy.
