Probably too much impact and contraction, and not enougth preperation or stretching

Get better footwear. And warm up and warm down. I know ALL about knee injuries. Trust me there no joke.

See a physio, I got knee problems after running 30-40 miles a week after about 6 months, I'd never done much running before. 4 different doctors told me it was ligament damage from over training, but I was also getting problems in my elbows from boxing.
Had 2 months off training then got round to seeing a physio, told me bets its nothing to do with what the doctors have been saying and that he thinks im suffering from a stiff back causing tight nerves, hence problems all over my body and that he will prove it now and make me better, he did so in about 10 minutes. But, the problem came back again after I got over excited and started hammering the running again but eventually I got over the problem, just recently. Alls I needed was my spine loosening up and to keep it that way.

In the mean time, try non-impact training; such as swimming or cycling

Even better run in water, but make sure your chin is on the water line.

Without performing an examination on you, i'd suggest that this is an overuse injury - this is very common.

Reduce your distance, and high impact exerice. Substitute running for a low impact altenative. Over time, reduce reduce your low impact work and increase your running. If you still feel pain, its time for further medical examination.

if there is some swelling or something it could be a tendon, arthritis/water on the knee, or like other ppl r saying just sore.
try a better warm-up/stretch and get newer shoes possibly as well

Yes very good point. Just because the pain is coming from the knees doesnt mean the problem is originating in the knees.

Good shoes that offer good support and proper stretching are very important as others said.

I had knee pain before and my knees were in perfect shape, it was combination of bad shoes, stiff hamstrings and illodial bands, muscle imbalance and other things that caused my knees not to be tracking right causing pain and stiffness but the knees themselves were physically healthy.

Get to a knee doctor and he does xrays after that they send you to a physical therapist who can find out the cause for the knee pain if they knee is ok itself.

elTerrible is nearest the mark, go to a good Osteopath. He should be able to tell you the problem as you walk towards Him
